Reid Jorgensen wasn’t about to let the Kelowna Rockets steal a road win out of The Vault.
The Kamloops Blazers forward scored a crucial short-handed goal, the first of three unanswered markers in the third period, to hand the Rockets a 5-2 defeat at Interior Savings Place in Kamloops on Friday night.
“I thought in the second period, we still had some life; it was only 2-2,” said Rockets coach Jeff Truitt. “We had some pressure, but we didn’t take enough shots to be a threat.
“Then, in the third, we didn’t capitalize on a 5-on-3 that could of given us some life, and then they scored on the 5-on-4.
“The short-handed goal was the difference. We never recovered after that.”
Jorgensen also had two assists for for the Blazers (27-10-1-1), who have won four in a row. Ray Macias, with two goals, Brock Nixon and Brady Mason also found the back of the net for Kamloops.
Justin Bernhardt, on the power play, and Myles MacRae replied for the Rockets (12-23-2-3), who had one-goal leads in both the first and second periods.
Kamloops goaltender Dustin Butler turned aside 18 shots, while Kelowna’s Torrie Jung stopped 32. The Rockets were 1-for-6 on the power play, the Blazers 3-9, improving on a special teams unit that is second only to Medicine Hat.
“We got (a goal) on one of our first power plays, but they won all the battles after that,” said Truitt. “They’ve got a great power play at home.”
The Blazers picked up two points on Vancouver (30-13-2-0), and are now just five points back of the B.C. Division leaders. The Rockets are one point up on the fifth-place Chilliwack Bruins (12-26-2-2), but have two games in hand.
The Bruins lost 1-0 to the Medicine Hat Tigers on Friday, setting up a big showdown tonight at Prospera Place with the Rockets.
“You’ve got to be excited about this one. It’s a four-point game,” said Truitt. “We’ve got to come with our best and dictate the pace.”
Game time is 7 p.m.
