Rockets Shining Example

At St. Joe's we know what family and community are all about. Our children are in a wonderful school environment where families know each other and work together to be the "village" in raising our children. It was refreshing to see an example of that commitment to community outside our St. Joe's family today. The Kelowna Rockets Organization was a shining example of what's good in Kelowna.

Last Monday 38 five year old kindergarten children from St. Joseph Elementary arrived with their teachers, parents, grandparents and volunteers to have a field trip to Prospera to ice skate. As you can imagine, it takes a lot of energy to bundle up, lace up and prepare that many little ones. Eyes peering over the boards they began to wonder why the Rockets were still practicing-maybe they were going to get to skate with them?

A few fathers joined in the anticipation as well. It was soon to be discovered that in fact a communication error had been made and the Rockets actually had a scheduled practice. To the great disappointment of the eager skaters and the family members who had rearranged work and other schedules to be there with their little ones, it was obvious that they were not going to skate. They unlaced and unbundled and drove back to the school. Try explaining this to 5 year olds! Thankfully we have wonderful teachers at St. Joe's who taught a lesson about life and that sometimes things don't always go according to plan.

The Kelowna Rockets heard about what had happened after the fact and although it was no fault of their own for the mishap, they cared enough about their little fans to give them an extraordinary day today. The Rockets bus arrived at the school this morning complete with uniformed players on board. They gathered up all 38 kids and teachers and drove them to the rink. They skated with them, played with them and then gave each of them a bag full of Rockets goodies. They showed our children that the values they live with everyday at our school are also being lived in our community. Thank you Rockets for caring about our kids and for giving them a day they won't soon forget. Thanks for being part of the "village".

Thanks for posting that here Kristi. As someone who used to live in Kelowna and now in Swift Current, I love hearing stories like this. Way to go Rockets.
