Hitmen beat Chiefs in overtime

A riled-up group of Calgary Hitmen pushed back Friday night and rallied for a 4-3 victory over the homestanding Spokane Chiefs in a wild Western Hockey League game that more often resembled a rodeo.

Rookie goaltender Martin Jones, making his third straight start, stopped all three Spokane players in the shootout to make Freddie Pettersson's leadoff goal stand as the winner after the Hitmen rallied from a 3-1 deficit with two late goals in the third period.

The Hitmen, fresh off a nine-hour bus ride to the U.S. city, were greeted by rock 'em, sock 'em hockey during which the Chiefs were often allowed to bulldog and obstruct their opponents without penalty through the first 40 minutes.

Led by the net-crashing antics of Brodie Dupont, the Hitmen came out with their own version of hard-nosed play in the third period, outshot the Chiefs 14-9 and sent the game to overtime, where they were unable to end it despite starting the sudden-death session on a power play.

Derek LeBlanc scored his 10th and 11th goals of the season to pace the victors while Karl Alzner's sixth tied the game at 14:59 of the final period. Former Hitman Justin Falk, Drayson Bowman and J.P. Szaszkiewicz scored for the Chiefs, who led 2-1 after the first and second periods.

The result enabled the Hitmen, now on a three-game winning streak, to stay one point in front of the Red Deer Rebels for third place in the Central Division. The Hitmen continue their three-game road swing tonight at Cranbrook, B.C., where the Kootenay Ice bowed 6-5 to the Medicine Hat Tigers on Friday.

Calgary plays at Red Deer on Tuesday.
