Rebels down Hitmen in OT
Entertaining game features a little bit of everything

The Calgary Hitmen took another one on the chin Tuesday night but were able to salvage a valuable Western Hockey League point.

The Hitmen bowed 4-3 in overtime to the homestanding Red Deer Rebels in a battle for third place in the Central Division with the result leaving both teams tied for that position and four points ahead of the fifth-placed Lethbridge Hurricanes.

Calgary, which is right back at it tonight (7 p.m., Fan 960) against the visiting Chilliwack Bruins, was coming off a last-second, 4-3 loss to the Kootenay Ice on Sunday.

Brodie Dupont scored twice, while Ryan White had a goal and two assists and rookie Devon Kalinski his second goal of the season as the Hitmen fired 28 shots at goalie James Reimer.

White's point collection lifts him to No. 1 in league scoring with 74 points.

Martin Hanzal, Brett Sutter, Jordan Henry, Luke Betts and Mike Berube, with the winning goal at 4:29 of overtime, scored for Red Deer, who tested rookie goalie Martin Jones 32 times.

Calgary twice held two-goal leads, 2-0 after the first period and 3-1 late in the second, only to have Red Deer score three in a row to take a 4-3 lead at 4:46 of the third. Kalinski forced OT at 8:50.

The game offered a little bit of everything. There was quick pace, exciting goaltending, tons of special teams play and an opening faceoff fight between White and Hanzal, who White is also duking it out with for the league scoring lead.

That penalty led to a seemingly never-ending parade as referee Derek Herman would follow with 21 minors for 17 power plays, 10 to Red Deer, including the only one in overtime when Steve Covington failed to convert a shorthanded breakaway. Each team scored twice with man advantages.
