Games in hand don’t mean much when you lay an egg and the Lethbridge Hurricanes dropped a carton full on the Enmax Centre ice surface Thursday night.
Ripped 8-1 by the Kootenay Ice just two days after being dominated 5-1 in Cranbrook, the Hurricanes gave away their game in hand on the Red Deer Rebels without so much as a tussle.
They surrendered a little more in the eyes of head coach Michael Dyck.
“I’d call it an embarrassment and yet this could be a defining moment for us,” he said. “Nobody wants to play in a game where you’re getting beaten at home like that and it’s pretty easy to hide and want to crawl into a hole and run away from it, but it takes a man to stand up to it.
“We had some guys crawl into a hole and some guys buckle under and disappear and that’s probably the most disappointing part of the whole night.”
The ’Canes (27-24-2-3) actually controlled the play and the shot clock in the opening 20 minutes, but it was the Ice with a 2-1 lead after they converted two of their five shots on Hurricanes goaltender Justin Leclerc.
Chad Greenan and Paul MacDonald scored goals 2:27 apart midway through the frame and silenced what was already a comatose Enmax Centre crowd.
Struggling to contain the Ice in the defensive zone, the ’Canes turned the period around thanks to a five-on-three power play that netted their first goal. Kris Hogg set up in the low slot and rapped home a perfect Mitch Fadden feed and from there the ’Canes kept the pressure on the rest of the period, leading to a 12-4 shots edge.
Kootenay (38-13-2-3) dominated the middle frame, scoring four times in the opening 8:27 and running up a 12-1 shots edge along the way (it would end up 17-4 overall). The lowlights were many, including Curtis Billsten and Andrew Bailey trading set-ups for tallies 27 seconds apart to make it 5-1; followed by a Ryan Russell power play goal. Rookie Kevin King also scored, part of the 16-year-old’s two-point night.
It got so bad the public address announcer didn’t announce the Russell marker at the tail end of the Kootenay explosion. Leclerc, victimized for five goals on 16 shots, was replaced by Michael Maniago.
The team’s whiteout promotion was only reflected on the blanched faces of the near-4,000 in attendance.
In the third, Bauer picked a corner on Michael Maniago just 1:44 in after being left alone in the slot for a five-count, and Michael Stickland completed the scoring on a late breakaway.
“Maybe we needed something like this to happen . . . we’ll see,” Dyck said.“The last thing on my mind right now is Saturday night (against Moose Jaw); the first thing on my mind is (today) and let’s just say that we’re going to find out what we’re made of,” Dyck continued. “The message is very clear: If you don’t believe we can do this and you’re not willing to buy into it, then go home, because that’s the easy thing to do. If you’re willing to be here and you’re willing to believe in what we want o get done here then stick around but you’re going to have to work through some adversity.”
ICE CHIPS — Lethbridge was 1-for-6 on the power play, Kootenay 1-for-3 . . . Three stars reflected a Hurricane selection despite the lopsided score, as imposed upon the media by the Hurricanes . . .
