Bortis' return lifts Broncos to road win

STEVEN MAH
The Southwest Booster

The return of 18-year-old forward Kyle Bortis proved to be just the right medicine for the Swift Current Broncos recent road woes. Bortis scored a goal and set up another 1:03 later to help the Broncos earn a valuable two points against their division rival Prince Albert Raiders. The Broncos quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead and never looked back in front of 2,346 fans at the Art Hauser Centre in Prince Albert on Friday night.

In his first game back since suffering an ankle injury New Years Day against the Saskatoon Blades, Kyle Bortis opened the scoring 7:00 into the first period with a powerplay goal, his 11th of the season.

David Stieler scored on the powerplay 1:03 later, his eighth goal of the season, to give the Broncos a 2 goal lead heading into the second period.

Prince Albert right winger Ryan Depape cut the lead in half with a powerplay goal midway throught the second period, his 20th goal of the campaign.

Broncos leading scorer Levi Nelson restored the two goal lead 1:37 later, with the only even-strength goal of the game.

Ryan McDonald scored the Raiders second powerplay goal of the game with 4:16 remaining to cut the Broncos lead to 3-2.

But Moir and the Broncos would close the door on the Raiders in the games closing moments earning their fifth victory over the Raiders in as many outings.

Swift Current was successful on two of seven powerplay opportunities while the Raiders scored on two of their eight powerplay chances.

Kyle Moir made 27 saves on 29 Raider shots to earn the win in goal for the Broncos. The road win improves Moir's season record to 14-20-0-1.

Jesse Deckert stopped 25 of 28 Broncos shots in the loss for the Raiders. Deckert's record drops to 17-15-1-1.

The win improves the Broncos record to 25-28-1-2. The Broncos are now tied with the Raiders with 53 points a piece although the Raiders hold one game in hand.

The loss drops the third place Raiders record to 24-26-3-2.

Swift Current will host the Calgary Hitmen Sunday night at the Centennial Civic Centre in Swift Current at 7:00 p.m.

After watching this game i finally had proof of how Kyle Bortis makes this team so much better. In his absense we where lacking puck possesion (especially along the boards) he comes back and suddenly we get it again.
Also the 3-2 score kinda flattered the Raiders, without Deckert (who should have been the first star, if he wasnt named it). He made numerous huge saves denying the Broncos in close.
We get the day off today, and Calaray i believe is in Brandon. hopefully we can take advantage of a tired team come sunday and hit them into the ice. Should be a good one.
