I know that Cory More was in camp but since the Broncos issued a statement congratulating the two players on the current roster (Wudrick and Gervais) and the two prospects (Macaulay and Mistelbacher, then still a SC prospect) and no word on More, I assumed that he is no longer listed with the Broncos. But I might be wrong.

Hockey team laced with WHL talent

Cory Wolfe, The StarPhoenix
Published: Wednesday, February 21, 2007

Saskatchewan has the greenest jerseys -- and one of the greenest rosters -- for the men's hockey competition at Canada Winter Games in Whitehorse.

The Prairie pucksters have a different colour in mind, though.

"We've talked about winning gold in our camp right from Day 1," says Saskatchewan head coach Brad Mueller.

"Sure, we're probably a bit younger than most teams," says Saskatoon forward Jimmy Bubnick, "but with all of the (Western Hockey League) players we have and the talent of our defence corps, we have a chance of winning it for sure."

Saskatchewan placed fifth in men's hockey at the 2003 Games in New Brunswick. That same year, former Saskatoon Blade Wacey Rabbit helped Alberta win gold.

The under-17 tournament showcases mostly 16-year-old prospects. However, Saskatchewan carries four underage players, all from the midget AAA Saskatoon Contacts. Bubnick, Carter Ashton and Brayden Schenn form a potent line, while Jared Cowen is the most highly touted Saskatchewan defencemen in more than a decade.

All four players were top-10 picks during last spring's WHL bantam draft for 1991-born players.

"They're underaged guys, but we expect them to be very skilled players and I think they're going to make a major contribution to our team," says Mueller, an assistant coach with the University of Regina Cougars.

TWO BLADES ON CLUB

Saskatchewan's roster also features nine WHL regulars: Gaelan Patterson and Teigan Zahn (Saskatoon Blades), Blaine Tendler and Jordan Trach (Prince Albert Raiders), Jeremy Boyer (Seattle Thunderbirds), Bo Montgomery (Portland Winter Hawks), Kruise Reddick (Tri-City Americans), Chad Suer (Moose Jaw Warriors) and James Wright (Vancouver Giants).

"The guys from the Dub have been playing with bigger and faster players, so they can bring leadership," says Wright, a Saskatoon export who is enjoying a fine rookie season with the Giants.

"I hope to bring a winning attitude, coming from a good team. I want to bring experience and help the young guys out, but I'm also going to try to learn myself."

Wright is recognized as perhaps the smoothest 1990-born skater in Western Canada. Several of his Saskatchewan teammates -- defencemen included -- are also fleet of foot. Goaltenders Jeff Bosch of the Saskatoon Blazers and Jordan Washburn of the Prince Albert Mintos are expected to chip in with quick reflexes.

"(Speed) was one of our important criteria through the selection process," says Mueller. "We want guys that can play at a high tempo and make decisions at high speeds."

Bubnick's ability to twist defenders inside out suggests that he's spent his fair share of time playing shinny.

"It's cold here and most kids grow up playing hockey. I was from a small town (Esterhazy) and everyone played hockey," says Bubnick whose family moved to Saskatoon when he was eight. "That's how you met your friends -- by growing up at the hockey rink."

Wright is the lone Saskatchewan native on the Giants' roster, so he takes his share of ribbing about his homeland. He relishes it, though.

"I don't mind being called a hard worker because I'm from Saskatchewan," says Wright. "That's all right by me."

Im suprised that Curtis Hamilton didnt make the B.C team. He's 15 and i believe hes the 6th best scorer in his league. Nice to see Elliot the only 15 on their D-line.

Yep, thats the correct Phaneuf. Looked real good at camp back in the fall. Bob Tory has been on a roll drafting them 'Peg boys lately.

Games timing couldn't be worse

Doug McConachie, The StarPhoenix
Published: Friday, February 23, 2007

For something that comes only once every four years, the Canada Winter Games is proving downright disruptive for the Western Hockey League. And disruptive is describing it mildly.

Just as the WHL enters the crucial three-week wrap-up to the regular season, the Games, which start Saturday, have whisked 40 kids away to Whitehorse for the next two weeks so that they can represent their provinces. Equally as disruptive, another 40 players have been taken from AAA midget teams just as those leagues enter playoffs.

The timing couldn't be worse and the question has to be asked: Why?

Why are the Games taking those who have already earned a mark of distinction by being drafted, or are now playing, in the elite junior leagues? For table tennis, archery or artistic gymnastics, it wouldn't matter whether these games were held in November or March. But hockey is different and these players make a difference.

The Saskatoon Blades, fighting for playoff life and desperately short of players through injuries, lose Gaelan Patterson and would have lost defenceman Teigan Zahn were it not for a fractured jaw that has left him out of action for almost two months.

The Regina Pats lose leading scorer Jordan Eberle to Team Alberta while rookie blue-liner Colten Teubert, who has been outstanding this season, is gone to Team B.C. With 12 games remaining in the Pats' schedule, those players are gone for six of them.

The Swift Current Broncos and Prince Albert Raiders are fighting for third spot in the WHL East Division and trying to stay ahead of the Blades and Moose Jaw Warriors. The Broncos lose Geordie Wudrick to B.C. and Philip Gervais to Alberta. P.A. says good-bye to Jordan Trach and defencemen Blaine Tendler -- both with Team Saskatchewan.

Moose Jaw loses defenceman Chad Suer, also to Saskatchewan. And throughout the league, it's more of the same.

The Kelowna Rockets lose four players at a time when they're battling to stay ahead of the Chilliwack Bruins for a playoff spot in the B.C. Division. Everett, the best team in the WHL so far this season, loses 16-year-old Kyle Beach, who is the team's third leading scorer with 28 goals. Wednesday, Seattle played in Lethbridge without a backup goaltender as Jacob DeSerres was on his way to Whitehorse with Team Alberta.

Nor does it end with just the WHL. The Saskatoon Contacts, in a bottleneck battle in the SMAAAHL for a playoff position, lose Carter Ashton, Jimmy Bubnick, Jared Cowan and Brayden Schenn. Goalie Jeff Bosch, who was an emergency call up for the Regina Pats last week, is now out of the Saskatoon Blazers lineup for two weeks.

Of the 80 players on the Western Canadian teams, you'd be hard pressed to find more than a handful of players who are not already on WHL or AAA midget teams. Just about everyone has been drafted by a WHL team.

The Red Deer AAA Optimist Rebels, who are hosts to this year's Telus Cup, lose forwards Cass Mappin and Landon Ferraro just as they prepare for their playoff run. What happens if those two losses contributed to a first-round playoff loss?

It is a situation that could be avoided. Unfortunately, because the Canada Games are motherhood and apple pie, nobody wants to stand up and say their players aren't going, even though all teams are being inconvenienced.

It would be far better if the Canada Games were to lower the age limit to 14. It would immediately attract the attention of every WHL scout in the country and you might even see a few NHL scouts pop their heads in the door. It would be a premier showing for youngsters hoping to be drafted this year and, no question, the hockey would be just as good.

At this level, at these Games, the players have nothing to prove. With these kids already committed, a WHL/NHL scout won't even show up. These kids already have enough on their plates.

While it might be fun, commitment to the parent club should now be the player's only concern.

You gotta feel for the North West Territories (especially their goalie!!)...

In their first game they played Saskatchewan and lost 13-0
Shots on goal: Saskatchewan 28+34+29=91 Territories 3+2+3=8

http://cwg2007.kimik-it.gl/gems_pictures/Game/8aa0cd1b-00fd-4264-9900-795c82169a47.pdf

In their second game they played Alberta and lost 17-0
Shots on goal: Alberta 42+36+28=106 Territories 1+1+1=3

http://cwg2007.kimik-it.gl/gems_pictures/Game/830e5c2f-3be0-49fd-a577-cdf0c18ae881.pdf

So in 2 games the NW Territories have been out scored 30-0 and outshot 197-11

Michael Taylor is the goalie and faced every shot thru those 2 games... Poor kid! Gotta give him credit so here is his profile from the Canada Games Page...http://cwg2007.kimik-it.gl/Result/ShowPerson.aspx?Person_GUID=650f275e-0b04-4874-911f-848be241dece&LM_LANG=en-CA
