Eric Fehr was last year's winner

Brandon, Manitoba – The Western Hockey League’s Brandon Wheat Kings have again teamed up with Shoppers Mall to give western Manitoba hockey fans the opportunity to vote for their choice of “Player of the Year”.

Beginning this week, fans will be able to vote for their favorite player two ways – 1) by visiting BDO Dunwoody Fan Services during each Wheat King home game or 2) going on line at www.wheatkings.com

This marks the fifth year that Shoppers Mall has given local fans the opportunity to select the team’s Most Valuable Player. After former all star right-winger Jordin Tootoo captured the honour three straight years, Washington Capitals’ first round draft choice Eric Fehr received the prestigious honour last winter.

The deadline for fans to vote is Tuesday, March 1st 2005 with the 2004-05 winner to be announced during the Wednesday, March 2nd WHL game against the visiting Saskatoon Blades at the Keystone Centre.

In other off-ice news, the Wheat Kings and MTS Yellow Pages have unveiled plans for it’s Takin’ it to the Streets Contest for the 2004-05 campaign. The contest, which is open to all hockey fans between the ages of 8 and 12, gives fans the opportunity to earn the right to play members of the Wheat Kings in a special Street Hockey game later this year.

In addition to facing off against his or her hockey heroes, the winner will receive an autographed replica jersey and hockey stick. The deadline to enter is Monday, February 21st 2005.

Fans can enter by visiting the hockey club’s official web site at www.wheatkings.com.

Meanwhile Ryan Stone and Steven Later will be visiting Valleyview Community School this Thursday as Manitoba Public Insurance hosts it’s regular School Patrol Luncheon, sponsored by Subway. The School Patrol Luncheon is a partnership between MPI, the Wheat Kings and the Brandon Police Service.

On the ice, the Portland Winter Hawks will pay their first visit to Brandon in two years when they take on the Wheat Kings Wednesday night at the Keystone Centre. Game time is 7:00 p.m. and tickets are on sale now at the Keystone box office, by calling 726-3555 or on line at ticketmaster.ca
