Tribe falls to Pats but holds ground

MATTHEW GOURLIE
The Moose Jaw Times Herald

REGINA — The Moose Jaw Warriors suffered some losses Saturday.
Most importantly they didn’t lose ground in the playoff chase and they’re far from losing hope.
The Warriors 5-1 loss to the Regina Pats Saturday leaves them with a 27-39-3-0 record. They remain in fifth place in the East Division one point behind Prince Albert and three points ahead of the Saskatoon Blades. The Swift Current Broncos clinched third place with their 2-1 win Sunday in Prince Albert.
In addition to losing the game, the Warriors lost the Mayor’s Cup to the Pats for the first time. They also lost Ryan Stanton who left the game with a leg injury and after trying it for one aborted shift, didn’t return.
The Warriors grabbed a 1-0 lead when Jordan Knackstedt netted his 23rd of the season on a five-on-three power play.
The Pats took the momentum when Kyle Ross scored a short-handed goal in the second period to tie the game. Ross turned provider as Troy Ofukany buried a Ross rebound to give the Pats the lead.
“What deflated us was that short-handed goal they got and then they came down and drove the net hard to make it 2-1,” said Warriors head coach Rene Lemire. “We continued to battle and once they got that third goal . . . we didn’t recover. Regina was strong. Their horses were stronger than ours tonight.”
Curtis Hunt said he wasn’t overly concerned with winning the Mayor’s Cup, he felt a Pats-Warriors game was ideal for their playoff preparations.
“It’s a great rivalry. We challenged our guys and I felt they responded really well after one period to raise the level of our game and understand that this is going to be as close to a playoff game as we’ve had all year.”
With three games left — Wednesday in Saskatoon and a home-and-home with Swift Current — every game will have a playoff atmosphere for the rest of the season.
“We have work to do — there are some small thing where we have to adjust,” said Lemire. “We have to get better going to the net, eliminate some of these turnovers and keep focusing on the positives. Guys worked hard in the first, hard in the second and gave up in the third when it was 3-1.”
Ross, Ofukany, Garrett Festerling and Jordan Eberle each had a goal and an assist. Michael MacAngus also scored for the Pats.
Stanton’s status is unknown, but Lemire said that: “he popped something he said. He’s in a lot of pain.”
Joey Perricone made 27 saves for the Warriors, while Tommy Tartaglione stopped 21 shots for the Pats.

For what it's worth, I pulling for MJ. They have gone through a lot this year, as an organization.
