The Swift Current Broncos failed to get off to the start they desired in their first round best-of-seven playoff series with the Regina Pats losing 4-0 on Friday night. The Broncos entered the game with hopes of stealing away home ice advantage with a win, but instead they allowed three goals in 5:21 in the second period to put the game out of reach before the contest's midway point.
The Broncos were outshot in the game 30-23 by the Pats including a 13-7 margin in the opening frame of the series.
Pats forward Kaspars Saulietis opened the playoff scoring for the Pats when he beat Kyle Moir 5:00 into the first period. The 6'4' native of Riga, Latvia was acquired from the Kelowna Rockets midway through the season and posted a total of 34 points in 59 WHL games in his first season.
Michael MacAngus scored a powerplay goal 2:51 into the middle frame to stretch the lead to 2-0 with 16-year-old forward Geordie Wudrick serving a tripping penalty in the box. MacAngus played 30 games in a Pats uniform this season after being acquired from the Saskatoon Blades. MacAngus posted 51 points in 70 games played this season.
Jared Jago scored an even strength 1:56 later to widen the Pats lead to 3-0. It was the Rosetown native's first playoff goal in his first playoff game after scoring 10 times for the Pats in his rookie season.
Pats leading scorer Garrett Festerling, who scored 10 points in eight games this season versus the Broncos, scored unassisted 3:25 after Jago's marker to close the game's scoring. Festerling led the Pats with 73 points in 67 games this season.
Overage Broncos goaltender Kyle Moir, who posted a 3.19 goals against average in the regular season, allowed four goals on 30 Regina shots on net.
Pats netminder Linden Rowat won his first playoff start by stopping all 23 shots fired his way. Rowat posted a 25-18-1-6 record this season including four shutouts.
The Broncos powerplay, which connected at a 16.6% mark in the regular season, failed to score in five powerplay opportunites.
The Pats powerplay, which connected at a 18.8% mark in the regular season, scored once in six tries.
The Broncos have now lost the past five head-to-head meetings with the Pats since defeating them 9-0 on Jan. 9th in Swift Current. In the five games since the lopsided Broncos' win the Pats have outscored the Broncos 23-6. The Broncos have also yet to win at the Brandt Centre, losing all four regular season games.
Saturday night the Broncos will look to even the series 1-1 when the two teams meet at 7 p.m. in game two in Regina.
