The Western Hockey League’s Brandon Wheat Kings have announced that 17-year old rookie goalkeeper Tyler Plante has been chosen the club’s Jack Fraser Player of the Month for February.

A former third round bantam draft choice of Brandon in 2002, Plante was unbeatable last month, posting a perfect 8-0 record, an impressive 2.04 goals against average and a stellar .923 save percentage in nine appearances for the Wheat Kings, who won twelve of thirteen games in February to move into top spot in the WHL’s Eastern Division.

Entering tonight’s game against the visiting Saskatoon Blades at the Keystone Centre, Plante has appeared in 40 games, posting a 28-9-2 record, a 2.65 goals against average and a .905 save percentage.

In winning the club’s monthly honour, the 17-year old local product, who backstopped Brandon to last year’s National Midget Championship, edged out the high scoring duo of Eric Fehr and Ryan Stone.

Fehr, who currently leads the WHL in scoring with 92 points including 52 goals, had ten goals and 25 points last month while Stone scored a team high 11 goals and added thirteen assists for 24 points. Stone is second in league scoring with 29 goals and 84 points.

In recognition of the honour, Tyler will receive a shirt, tie and suit from Jack Fraser in the Shoppers Mall, the official menswear clothier of the Wheat Kings during tonight’s game.

Tonight’s game is the second of a home and home series between these two teams. On Tuesday night, Eric Fehr scored his record setting fifth overtime winning goal of the season as the Wheat Kings dumped the Blades 5-4. With that goal, Fehr broke Frank Kovacs record that was set as a member of the Regina Pats during the 1990-91 season. The win also gave Brandon a league best 9-1-5 overtime record this season, establishing a new franchise record for overtime victories in a single season as well as matching the league record previously set by the Portland Winter Hawks in 1989-90.

The Wheat Kings will close out a mini 2-game home stand on Friday night against Swift Current before hitting the road for games next week in Moose Jaw, Medicine Hat.
