That is very sad news, and cancer is a terrible disease. However I am sure that he will overcome this with the support or his family, friends and teamates,as well as former teamates too. Loosing a parent is always hard,I can speak from experience,my dad was killed in June of 2003(20 days before my 15th birthday)

I know Dan Hulak a little bit, and he speaks very highly of his little bro as a person and a hockey player.
My thoughts and prayers to the family and friends.

I know Dan too, and was just last Thursday when we spoke, so this comes very sudden. My thoughts and prayers are with Dan, Derek, Dana, their father and the rest of their family.

Again very sad news but the Regina Pats are a very classy orginization for allowing him to come home and do what was best for him and his family.

I'm extremely saddened by this. It must be awful to lose your mom to cancer. I know how highly these guys think of their parents. The fact that they sometimes get split and live thousands of kilometres from each other, brings them that much closer together. I hope all will be well again one day for the Hulak family. Hockey will keep them going. Derek is an extremely dynamic hockey player. Best wishes.

A.M. Lineup Hulaks mourn passing

Special to The StarPhoenix
Published: Thursday, March 29, 2007

Alina Maria Hulak, mother of two prominent Saskatoon hockey players, died Tuesday after a brave battle with cancer. She was 48. Her youngest child, Derek, is a forward with the Saskatoon Blades. The Regina Pats respectfully traded the 17-year-old winger to his hometown Blades in January so that he could be close to his mother. Alina Hulak is also survived by her husband Jozef, son Daniel and daughter Michelle. Dan, the eldest, played four seasons with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies after a four-year Western Hockey League career with Swift Current and Portland. The funeral service for Alina Hulak is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Czestochowa Church (301 Ave. Y S).
