The Medicine Hat Tigers and the Regina Pats meet up in the MNP Eastern Conference Semi-Final for the first playoff series between the teams since the 1990-91 season. Jason Miller's Tigers defeated Mike Sillinger's Pats four games to one in the second round of the 1991 post-season.

The Tigers booked their place in the second of the playoffs for the fifth straight season after a hard-fought seven-game series versus Red Deer. The Tigers had their struggles on the road in their opening-round series, losing two of three games in Red Deer while allowing 15 goals in the process. Yet, aside from a Game 1 defeat, the Tigers dominated on home ice, shutting out the Rebels in each of the final three games of the series at the Medicine Hat arena. Medicine Hat will need to tighten up defensively on the road, especially versus an offensively gifted Regina squad.

Offensively, the Tigers averaged nearly four goals per game in their opening-round series, thanks to a potent power play that connected at a 24.5 per cent success rate. The Tigers will need their power play to remain hot, considering their opponent boasted the WHL second-best penalty killing through the opening round. Goaltender Matt Keetley picked up three shutouts in the opening round, but allowed 20 goals in the other four games of the series. He will need to find more consistency if the Tigers are to shut down the Pats' offensive weapons. The Tigers dominated the Pats during the regular season, winning all four meetings by a combined score of 16-4, and are 7-1-0-1 versus Regina over the last two seasons.

The Pats advanced to the second round of the playoffs for the first time since the 1998 post-season after beating the Swift Current Broncos four games to two in the MNP Eastern Conference Quarter-Final. The Pats were road warriors in the opening round, winning all three games they played in Swift Current, including the series-clinching Game 6.

They'll need an equally good showing on enemy ice in their second round series, as they'll need to win at least one game at the always-intimidating Medicine Hat Arena if they want to move on. Up front, Regina got plenty of offensive production from their top forwards. However, they'll need more secondary scoring from players like Kaspars Saulietis and Brett Leffler to match the offensive depth of the Tigers.

Regina's defense was a combined +10 versus Swift Current, while also limiting the Broncos to just four power play goals in 40 chances in the six-game series. Regina's shutdown duo of Craig Schira and Nick Ross will need to be even better to stop the Tigers' speedy, skilled forwards, and contain Medicine Hat's lethal power play. Goaltender Linden Rowat performed admirably versus the Broncos in his first-ever playoff series, ranking second among all WHL netminders in save percentage through the first round. He'll have to carry his solid play into the second round, as he'll face plenty of rubber versus the Tigers.
