Aaron Gagnon, who finished his career with the Seattle Thunderbirds on Saturday, is the Western Conference nominee for the Western Hockey League player of the year.

Gagnon, who played for the T-birds for five seasons and served as team captain the last two, is up against Kris Russell of Medicine Hat for the award that will be presented May 5.

In a season shortened due to a severely separated shoulder, Gagnon had 42 goals and 80 points in 59 games in the regular season. He signed with the Dallas Stars organization earlier this year and the team flew him to join the Iowa Stars of the American Hockey League after the T-birds' season ended.

Gagnon, a native of Armstrong, B.C., was also honored as a Western Conference all-star and is also a conference nominee for most sportsmanlike player of the year award.

"It's a great honor considering how many great players there are in the WHL," Gagnon said. "It's unbelievable to me to think I'm among those top players."

Russell, who plays for Medicine Hat, scored 32 goals and had 69 points for Medicine Hat this season, the only defenseman in the league to lead his team in scoring.

Gagnon played five seasons for the T-birds, appearing in 318 games. He scored 123 goals and had 121 assists in the regular season and added 18 goals and 12 assists in 45 playoff games.
