Civic Centre on time and budget

The Centennial Civic Centre is currently under construction and an update has been given on the progress of the building.

Dean Robson, Director of Recreation and Parks say they are ahead of the schedule.

"Right now we have turned the building over to the contractors, which means that the public can't just go in and wander around like we could before. It also means that we are about two weeks ahead of schedule. We were going to turn the building over on April 30th after the conclusion of the ice hockey season, but due to being done a little bit earlier we've been able to turn the building over earlier."

Inside the building crews are currently working to remove all of the equipment as well as boards.

"Right now the existing rink board system will be removed and has been already in fact. The glass is being stored in preparation for a new board system. All the refrigeration, mechanical and furnace equipment will be removed. Most of it is gone already but the rest of it will be moved this week."

The exterior of the Civic Centre is seeing much progress, with a lot happening on the north side.

"We will continue on the north end with some drainage. We will add some manholes. We are going to try and get some weeping tile, some membrane put on that north end to try and get rid of some of the water."

Robson also adds that the west end, where the curling rink, is also in full swing.

"The trusses on the west end of the curling rink ice surface area side will be going up really soon and the south end will be going as well, the concrete slab for the new chiller room. That's the number one priority to get the chiller room in place and get the ice refrigeration system intact so we can test it in late summer or early fall."

As far as the east side, walls are in the process of going up.

"On the east end we have started the concrete walls. They are pretty much in place and we will be removing that old wall within the next two weeks.

Robson also explains that the project is running smoothly considering the months of January and February were very wet months.

"We are currently on budget and in fact as far as schedule goes we are about a week behind probably about a month ago with mud and freezing and water and rain and what not in January and February and now we have caught right up. We are right back to par and we are actually expected to take right off. There are lots of people on site working so it's good."

Robson also added that the scheduled project is about half done.

"We are about half way done the scheduled project. I mean if we are looking at a Christmas deadline we started in late September, and we are in April so we are about seven months done, but hopefully in the summer it will go quick."

I had to do some work for a contracter from Regina that was working on the hospital and is now at the Civic Center. He was telling me that they were supposed to start work about two months ago at the Civic Center, and still won't be able to start until the middle of May. So according to him they are about two and a half months behind schedule.
