Former Bronco wins Allan Cup

Former Swift Current Bronco defenseman Jeff Henkelman captured the 2007 Allan Cup with the Lloydminster Border Kings over the weekend in Stoney Plain, Alta.

The Border Kings downed the Whitby Dunlops 4-3 for their first Allan Cup win since 2001. The Allan Cup is hosted annually to decide the Canadian Senior AAA champions.

Henkleman scored twice and set up three goals in five games for the Border Kings during the tournament. Henkleman played in 229 regular season games for the Broncos from 1994-1998 followed by four seasons with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies.

The Border Kings advanced to the finals with a 5-4 win over the host Stoney Plain squad who dressed former Broncos forward Russ Hewson.

Hewson scored three goals and assisted on three others in three Allan Cup games. Hewson played 118 games with the Broncos from 1992-94 before playing two-and-half seasons with the Regina Pats. Hewson went on to play five prolific season with the University of Alberta Golden Bears before brief stops in the American and East Coast Hockey Leagues.

Also skating in the tournament were former Broncos Chad Beagle and Brett Allan, both who suited up with the Bentley (Alta.) Generals. Beagle had one assist in three games after registering 26 points in 21 regular season games. Beagle skated in 253 games for the Broncos tallying 123 points and 625 penalty minutes from 1994-99 before a brief stint at the University of Saskatchewan with the Huskies.
