Calgary, Alberta -- Defenceman Keith Aulie, who will celebrate his 18th birthday this July, has joined some pretty select company in being chosen the 2006-07 winner of the Doc Seaman Scholastic Player of the Year Trophy as the Western Hockey League hosted its annual Awards Luncheon in Calgary Wednesday afternoon.
A grade 12 student from Rouleau, Saskatchewan, Aulie becomes the fifth Wheat King to win this prestigious award, joining the likes of Brett Dickie (2003), Stefan Cherneski (1997), Byron Penstock (1994) and Kevin Cheveldayoff (1988). Other winners have included the likes of Goodlands, Manitoba product Chris Nielsen (Calgary Hitmen), Vancouver Giants' scoring star Gilbert Brule, Scott Niedermayer of the Kamloops Blazers and Brandon's Bryce Salvador while he was skating for the Lethbridge Hurricanes.
In 66 games this past season, the second year blueliner scored once and finished with 9 points and 82 minutes in penalties. During his two years in Brandon, the former first round bantam draft pick has 11 points and 114 penalty minutes in 104 regular season games.
Aulie's current grade point average is a remarkable 91%, having enrolled in grade 11 physics, grade 12 English Comp, grade 12 calculus, grade 12 history and computer science during the first term this past year. During the second semester, he's taking grade 12 english and physics.
Daryl (Doc) Seaman has been a pioneer in promoting higher education and hockey for many years. A staunch supporter of the efforts of Hockey Canada and the WHL to ensure all players are able to combine education with hockey, Seaman has been a great promoter of the City of Calgary, as evidenced by his efforts to bring the Atlanta Flames to the southern Alberta city.
While Aulie was named the WHL's Scholastic Player, Brandon's graduating captain Mark Derlago was edged out by Seattle's Aaron Gagnon for the Brad Hornung Trophy that goes to the league's Most Sportsmanlike player.
A 20-year old Brandon product, Derlago led the WHL this past season in goals with 46 and during his 4-year WHL career, the former Manitoba AAA Midget League scoring champion had 74 goals and 162 points in 209 career games. As well, he accumulated just 110 penalty minutes including 34 this past season.
