****The Swift Current Broncos have selected Christian Magnus of Saskatoon with the 9th overall pick.******

This from the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix newspaper on Magnus:

Magnus scored 32 goals in 26 league games for the Saskatoon Bandits, then added another 27 in 18 tournament contests. He's skilled and a very clean player, scouts say. Without him, his team may not have won more than two games, one hockey official speculated.

Magnus, who will play with the Saskatoon Blazers next year, says a lot of teams have talked to him. "So I hope that's a good thing." They want to know whether he will play in the WHL if drafted or what his school marks are (Magnus has an 82 per cent average).

"I'll go anywhere," the five-foot-11 Magnus says, but admitted his favourite team might be the Saskatoon Blades because it is his hometown and he goes to a lot of the games.

The Swift Current Broncos have announced that they have selected Taylor Ernst in the 2nd round (30th overall) in the 2007 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft.Hey Scout, patsrock83 (the guy that was with me at the season opener) coached Taylor in 2005-06 with the Bantam Regina Hawks. He also played a few games for patsrock again this year in Midget for the Hawks(Tier 2)... almost always one of the best players on the ice!

# 1 Christian Magnus. Played for Saskatoon Bandits AA team last year where he averaged over 2 points per game. Has not bad size at 5'11" and is excited to be drafted by the Broncos. I heard an interview on the radio and his mom and grandma were screaming happy that he got picked by a team close to home.

# 2 Taylor Ernst. A Regina defenceman and another player who i'm sure is excited as is his family that he got picked by a team close to home. Played for Regina Senators Bantam AA team where he averaged a point a game. Nivek Wahs has seen him play and says he was always one of the best players on the ice.

# 3 Dane Muench. A left winger who only stands 5'8" and 150 lbs. A player from Martinsville who played for the Saskatoon Contacts AAA team last year. In 43 games he had 12 goals 17 assists and 42 pim. The think about Muench is he was rated a top ten prospect for this years draft. Not sure if size scared away some teams or what but to get him at # 74 is a steal. He is also one of the only players to play Midget AAA last year.

#4 Michael Hay. A center from Winnipeg who played for the Winnipeg Hawks a AAA Bantam team. He stands 5'10" and in 29 games scored 31 goals 19 assists for 50 points to go along with 38 pim.

# 5 Allistair Chapman. A Defenceman who played for Notre Dame Hounds Bantam AAA team where in 23 games he scored 15 goals and assisted on 32 others for 47 points which puts him at over 2 points per game. Sounds like an offensive D-Man who also had 39 pim.

# 6 Guillaume Glasspoole. Another center out of Calgary who played for Calgary Royals White bantam AAA team last year. In 33 games he scored 31 goals assisted on 20 for 51 points. Now to go along with this he also had 103 pim. Sounds like a sniper with a won't put up with any crap attitude.

# 7 Patrick Coady. A right winger with good size standing 6'2". Played for East Central Chill bantam AAA last year which i think is in Alberta. Played 23 games where he scored 4times and assisted on 8 to go along with 69 pim.

# 8 Brody Luhning. A D-man from Balgonie. Stands 5'9" and with Prairie Storm AA had 3 goals and 17 assists in 25 games.

# 9 Zach Habscheid. The biggest shock to me in the draft. He's a D-Man who is Boston Bruin assistant coach Marc Habscheid's son. It will be interesting to see what developes here. Marc is a local product who along with his family spend the summer in Swift. Marc also was interviewed for the Bronco coaching job a few years back and lost out which left a bit of hard feelings. Will he allow Zach to attend Bronco camp? Have to see i guess.

It looks like we are shifting from size to speed and offence. We drafted 1 Right Winger, 4 Centers, 2 Left Wingers, and 2 defencemen. Also no B.C. kids this year where in past years most hailed from there. I thought we did good in the draft with alot of offence one thing we have missed in the past going for size and grit. With the rule changes most teams are going skill more than size and grit. Should be interesting.

Broncos sweep Prairies in 2007 Bantam Draft

STEVEN MAH
The Southwest Booster

The 2007 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft had a distinct Prairie flavor for the Swift Current Broncos Hockey Club. The Broncos used nine of 10 picks in the draft’s opening nine rounds to select nine players from Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Alberta, including four Saskatchewan born skaters. Overall the Broncos selected seven forwards and three defenseman.
With their first pick, ninth overall, the Broncos selected Christian Magnus, a 5’11”, 160 pound centre from Saskatoon. The Broncos made Magnus the highest Saskatchewan born player chosen in the 2007 draft. Magnus spent last season with the Saskatoon Bandits.
“Christian is a very skilled player who skates very well,” commented Broncos Head Scout/Director of Player Personnel Jamie Porter. “We feel that he fits well into the dynamic of what we want our team to look like in future years.”
Next the Broncos selected Taylor Ernst in the second round, 30th overall. Ernst, a right defenseman from Regina, stands 5’9” and weighs 165 lbs and spent last season with the Regina Senators.
“Taylor is an offensive defenseman that handles the puck very well,” commented Broncos Head Scout/Director of Player Personnel Jamie Porter. “He is a powerplay type defenseman that has a good intelligence of the game.”
With their two fourth round picks the Broncos selected Dane Muench and Michael Hay.
Muench was selected by the Broncos with the 74th overall pick and is a 5’6”, 140 pound left-winger from Martensville, SK. Muench spent last season with the Saskatoon Contacts of the SMHL.
“Dane is a skilled player and an excellent skater who isn’t afraid to shoot the puck often,” commented Porter. “He is a very competitive kid that played midget AAA last year as an underage player.”
The Broncos selected Winnipeg product Michael Hay with the 78th overall pick. Hay is a 5’11”, 137 lb centre who played with the Winnipeg Hawks in 2006/07.
“With Michael we chose an intelligent player that handles the puck very well and is a strong skater,” commented Porter. “Michael also brings good leadership to the table and makes the players he plays with better.”
With the 96th overall pick the Broncos selected Allistair Chapman, a defenseman from Calgary.
With the 118th pick the Broncos selected Guillaume Glasspoole, a centreman from Calgary.
In the seventh round the Broncos used the 140th pick to select right-winger Patrick Coady from Bashaw, AB.
The Broncos next used the 149th pick, acquired from Brandon, to select Calgary born centreman Andrew Sullivan.
With their eighth round, 162nd pick, the Broncos selected defenseman Brody Luhning from Lumsden.
With the ninth round, 184th pick, the Broncos selected their first player from outside the Prairies when they chose Zach Habscheid, a defenseman from Winchester, MASS. Habscheid does have a local connection though, he is the son of former National Hockey League journeyman Marc Habscheid who was born in Swift Current. Habscheid, who has coached in the SJHL, WHL, and with Team Canada at the World Junior Championships, World Championships, and Olympics, coached this season with the Boston Bruins as an assistant to Dave Lewis.
The first Southwest Saskatchewan player chosen was Bantam Raiders captain Luke Barry who was selected in the seventh round, 137th overall by the Tri-City Americans.
The Moose Jaw Warriors opened the draft with a bang when they acquired the first overall pick from the Portland and selected forward Quinton Howden, a 6’2 170lb forward from Oak Bank, MB. Howden is the highest selected Bantam draft pick in Warriors history ahead of Chad Hinz who was selected third overall in the 1994 draft.
Of the 22 players chosen in the first round, eight hailed from each of Alberta and British Columbia, three from Saskatchewan, two from Manitoba, and one from the United States.
Alberta led the way in the second round with nine players selected. B.C. was second with seven players selected. Saskatchewan and Manitoba each had three players selected.
In round three seven Saskatchewan skaters were chosen, followed closely by six Albertans. Manitoba and B.C. each had four skaters picked, while one American was chosen.
23 Albertans were selected in the draft's opening three rounds, followed by B.C. with 19 players selected. Saskatchewan followed with 13 players taken, four more than Manitoba who supplied only nine players. Only two Americans were selected in the opening three rounds.
