Rising and Falling
RISING

David Perron / Lewiston
Position: LW Height: 5.11.5 Weight: 180
There is a bit of Ales Hemsky/Claude Giroux in Perron. After playing junior A last year in Quebec, he has become one of the most dangerous offensive threats in the QMJHL this year. Perron had a very productive regular season but has raised his game in the playoffs, against Halifax, he produced 2 goals and 6 assisted in just 5 games, a goal and 4 assists in the last game in which he dominated. Some teams may have some concerns with his size, but this kid is a hockey player, through and through.

Mikael Backlund / Vasteras
Position: Center Height: 6.00 Weight: 191
He possesses that innate ability to find seams in the defensive zone and capitalize on the opportunities that he garners from that trait. His competitiveness and his strong leadership are other traits that we love. He can score important goals to lift his team. He drives the net hard with the puck and is able to beat D with quick moves. Previously, we at ISS had been cautious to move Backlund up in our rankings, however his strong play in Finland makes it easy to make that positive change. He is very mature for his age and has all the skills to succeed in the NHL.

Justin Vaive / US Under 18
Position: LW Height: 6.04.5 Weight: 210
Vaive displayed improvements in all areas of his game. Big player who is willing to use his size to his advantage. Skating is still below average but there has been improvement since the start of the season. Was willing to get his nose dirty. Finished his checks whenever possible, played his role well, made room for his linemates. A possible mid-late pick.

Eric Tangradi / Belleville
Position: Center Height: 6.03 Weight: 207
A big forward with a nice finish around the net. His skating needs improvement, but nonetheless, he was Belleville's key forward throughout the playoffs, creating buzz each shifting by playing simple hockey, going to the net and looking for rebounds. He is difficult to contain down low, good cycling forward, and plays with a lot of energy. He could be drafted late by a team who sees some potential for developing his skating.

Sergey Korostin
Position: RW Height: 5.09.5 Weight: 190
He was one of the best Russian players in the U18tournament. He is a very good skater - agile with good acceleration and lateral movement. Korostin makes smart decisions with puck. He is usable in PP and SH due to his skating and offensive abilities. His work ethic is at very high level he reads the game well. Has quick hands - can beat D in 1 on 1 situation.

Sebastian Erixon / Timra IK Jr
Position: LD Height: 5.11 Weight: 176
Erixon was very impressive throughout the event with his poise and his general control of the game. He has excellent puck skills and makes the right play most of the time. Also he has displayed the ability to get his shot through on the power play. His Sept. 12, 1989 birthdate make him one of the youngest available for 2007 Draft. Although he was not flashy and may have slid under scouts' radars, he has a very bright future.

Matt Marshall / Noble & Greenough
Position: RW Height: 6.00 Weight: 185
This lanky speed demon can really fly. Good work ethic. Made the jump from Massachusetts public school hockey to a strong prep team, Noble & Greenough, this year. Struggled early on when he wasn't getting chances to score based solely on his ability to skate around people like he did last year. As the season wore on, he learned to get more involved and he came in off the perimeter to get scoring chances. Needs to fill out his frame and get more confident in using his shot from the outside as good defenders will angle him off at the next level. Good up and down the wing and pretty reliable in his own end. Was committed to Northeastern for '08 coming into the season but has since backed out of it.

FALLING

Eric Doyle / Swift Current
Position: RD Height: 6.02.5 Weight: 180
An ISS favorite most of the year, however as the season progressed we observed that he hasn't been quite what we thought. Didn't have a good U-18 tournament. Has pretty good size. Took minor penalties, lazy penalties, not moving his feet. Made some questionable decisions with the puck under pressure. He still has a lot of the physical tools that we covet in defensemen but he really needs to put it all together.

Logan Couture / Ottawa
Position: Center Height: 6.00.5 Weight: 195
Was somewhat disappointed with overall play at the U-18 tournament as we expected a little bit more. Lacked acceleration with the puck, should have had a breakaway at one point, but couldn't pull away. Wasn't dangerous off the rush. Speed is an issue as it has not improved. May be a result of mono early in season and conditioning is not what it should be.

Alexander Oblinger / Germany 89
Position: Center Height: 6.02 Weight: 209
Oblinger certainly looks like he should be a player and at first glance he looks good but upon further examination, he never really gets anything done. He undoubtedly suffered from a lack of quality teammates but his effort level was sporadic at best and when his team needed him to lead, he became tentative and didn't accomplish anything.

The Toronto Maple Leafs pick 13th. They'll get a good player barring any trades. Finally, things are looking up! applause

gilles is rising like crazy, or is this a differnt scouting report, I seen he was like 20th on just narth american skaters not long ago

With a better scoring touch he would be ranked 1st by a green mile.

 yeah, if he developed Crosby like hands, you might have a case...

He is THE most frequently named player that fans would not want their favorite NHL team to waste a first round pick on...... by a green mile....

Who do you think they will pick? since I am a new Blades fan I am hoping for Colton Gillies I havn't had a chance to watch him over the past couple years but I hear he's good I hope he gets picked 13th overall and I hope our #13 retires!!!! and waite...how are things looking up just because we are picking high in the draft? that means we stunk it up in the season!!!

gillies and esposito are easily the two biggest lightning rod prospects in this years draft. mention their names and you will get a wide range of opinions.

gillies is a pretty safe pick. at minimum he is going to be a third line nhl'er contributing ballpark 10 goals and 30 to 40 points. it's the upside that's tough to predict (although you can say that about a lot of prospects). speed, responsible in his own end, leadership, physical play. if the points production increases, and i see no reason it cannot, he can be a first or second line pro.

some say why waste a first round pick on a potential third liner? there are a lot of first round picks who never make it to the show. gillies will make it. it's just a matter of what kind of player is he going to be when he gets there.

Gillies isn't a real smart player. I think he will drop. Same, same for Ellerby. Some of the best kids are coming out of the USHL this year for some reason. I think that a few of those players, along with Bill Sweatt from Colorado College, will surprise everyone come draft day. But Alex Plante from the WHL will be taken much higher than projected by some of these agencies. There is no way a kid with his size, background, and track record in the WHL will drop out of the first round.

The buzz seems to have Chicago taking Pat Kane, while Philly takes Kyle Turris, and James Van Reimsdyck going third overall. I say Sam Gagner goes fourth, Jakub Voracek fifth.
