Calgary - The Western Hockey League today announced the Regulations for breaking ties in the final standings at the end of the regular season schedule of games.

A. TIE IN STANDINGS FOR ANY POSITION OTHER THAN THE LAST PLAYOFF POSITION:

1 - The team with the greater number of wins shall receive the higher position in the standings.

2 - If two teams are still tied, the team with the best record in head-to-head competition (based on points earned including overtime losses) shall receive the higher position in the standings.

B. TIE IN STANDINGS FOR THE LAST PLAYOFF POSITION:

1 - Between two teams - A sudden-death game shall be played between the two teams. Home Ice advantage in the sudden-death game will be determined by A) above.

2005 WHL PLAYOFF FORMAT

The Western Hockey League playoff format will have the top four teams in each Division (B.C., Central, East, and U.S.) advance to the playoffs.

In both Conferences, the first round match-ups will feature best-of-seven series within each Division. The first place team will play the fourth place team, and the second place team will meet the third place team based on regular season standings.

In both Conferences, the second round match-ups will feature best-of-seven series within the Conference. The four clubs, which win their first round playoff series, will advance to the second round. The first place team will play the fourth place team, and the second place team will meet the third place team based on regular season standings.

In both Conferences, the third round match-up will feature best-of-seven series within the Conference. The two clubs, which win their second round playoff series, will meet with the home ice advantage going to the club with the most regular season points.

In the League Championship, the two Conference Champions will meet in a best-of-seven series with the home ice advantage going to the club with the most regular season points.


U.S. DIVISION

1) Seattle 40-21-2-2, *84pts, 7 games remaining
2) Portland 30-25-5-5, 70pts, 7 games remaining
3) Everett 29-25-8-2, 68pts, 8 games remaining
4) Tri-City 24-31-7-3, 58pts, 7 games remaining
5) Spokane 23-32-8-2, 56pts, 7 games remaining

Seattle officially clinched the U.S. division title with Saturday's win over Everett. It's their second division title in three seasons. The T-Birds host the Americans on Wednesday before heading to Everett on Friday.

Portland has clinched at least a tiebreaker and needs only one point to clinch a playoff spot outright. The Hawks currently lead Everett by two points for second place in the division and home ice advantage through the first round of the playoffs, although the Silvertips have a game in hand.

Portland is off until next Weekend's crucial home-and-home series with the 'Tips. Everett, meanwhile, visits Spokane on Wednesday before the weekend's big series with Portland.

Tri-Cities currently has a two-point edge over Spokane for the fourth and final playoff spot in the division with both teams having seven games remaining.

The Ams visit Kamloops on Tuesday and Seattle on Wednesday before a pivotal encounter with the Chiefs on Saturday in Spokane. The Chiefs host Everett on Wednesday and visit Portland on Friday before their date with the Ams on Saturday.
