Kelowna, BC: The Kelowna Rockets have announced that forward Brett Breitkreuz has been selected by the Edmonton Oil Kings in today’s WHL Expansion Draft.

The Rockets, along with all other teams in the WHL, were permitted to protect a total of 15 players currently on their protected lists who were born in 1987, 88, 89, 90. Players born in 1991, 92 were exempted from the draft. The Oil Kings selected from the remaining pool.

“It hurts to lose a guy that we chose in the Bantam Draft (2004, 2nd round, 40th overall) and in whom we have a lot of time invested,” said Rockets’ President and General Manager, Bruce Hamilton of Breitkreuz. “But, whenever a new team joins the league everyone else loses a player.”

“Certainly, from our standpoint, we feel Edmonton got themselves a good player.”

Breitkreuz, (6’1”, 207) joined the Rockets for the 2006-07 season and scored 8 goals and 14 points in 58 games as a rookie. Hamilton informed him of his selection earlier today.

“He’s disappointed but thankful for his time here,” said Hamilton. “It’s tough anytime you have to tell a player he’s moving on. Plus, in this case, we’re not getting anyone back in return.”

“Unfortunately, we couldn’t protect everyone and with us having so many 16-year-olds to protect, it left a number of good players available.”
