Brandon, Manitoba -- The Brandon Wheat Kings have acquired the playing rights to 18-year old right-winger Aaron Lewadniuk in a Western Hockey League trade completed Thursday morning with the Portland Winter Hawks.
A member of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League's Winkler Flyers this past season, the Carman product was chosen winner of the Vince Leah Trophy as the League's Rookie of the Year in 2006-07. He finished 13th in scoring and sixth in goals last year with 87 points including 43 goals in 61 games.
In addition to being named the League's Top Rookie, Lewadniuk - a sixth round pick of the Winter Hawks (110th overall) in the 2004 WHL Bantam draft - was selected to the MJHL's All Rookie Team and participated with Team West at the 2006 Canadian Junior A Hockey League Prospects Game last December.
Before joining the Flyers last winter, he played two seasons for the Pembina Valley Hawks of the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League. In 2005-06, he led the Hawks with 30 goals and 43 assists for 73 points in 37 games while playing on a line that featured current Wheat King Jay Fehr.
Thursday's deal is conditional, based on Lewadniuk reporting to the Wheat Kings. Currently, he's accepted a Scholarship at an NCAA school.
I have a feeling now he's closer to home, he'll reconsider the NCAA and might come to camp. What did Brandon give up in the deal?
