T-Birds blue liner is first defenseman taken in 2007 draft

Seattle, June 22 , 2007 - Seattle Thunderbirds defenseman Thomas Hickey was the fourth overall selection in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft by the Los Angeles Kings at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, Friday evening.

Hickey was the first defenseman and first player from the WHL taken in the 2007 draft.

"It's a great feeling to be drafted by Los Angeles," said Hickey from the draft. "This is something I have been working towards and it is great to be rewarded. I look forward to being a part of the Kings organization. I am also looking forward to getting back to Seattle and starting to get back to work because being drafted is only the beginning."
"We are very proud of Thomas and excited for him with his selection today by the Kings in the first round," said T-Birds General Manager Russ Farwell. "He is a tremendous player and will prove to be a solid player in the future for Los Angeles."

Last year Hickey led T-Birds defensemen in scoring with nine goals and 41 assists for 50 points. He had a plus/minus rating of plus-15 and also had 70 penalty minutes. Hickey's 41 assists led the team.

In his rookie season Hickey had one goal and 27 assists for 28 points with a plus/minus rating of plus- 2 with 53 penalty minutes.

T-Birds right wing Bud Holloway was taken by the Kings in the third round, 86th overall, of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.

Rounds 2 through 7 of the draft are Saturday afternoon in Columbus. Several T-Birds, including Jan Eberle and Radek Meidl, are projected to go in the second day of the draft.

In its 30-year history the T-Birds franchise has had 13 players selected in the first round of the NHL Draft. Those players are:

*Patrick Marleau, 2nd overall by San Jose, 1997
*Oleg Saprykin, 11th overall by Calgary, 1999
*Scott Kelman, 15th overall by Phoenix, 1999
*Thomas Hickey, 4th overall by Los Angeles, 2007
