WHL ANNOUNCES TIE-BREAKING PROCEDURES

Calgary - The Western Hockey League today announced the Regulations for breaking ties in the final standings at the end of the regular season schedule of games.

A. TIE IN STANDINGS FOR ANY POSITION OTHER THAN THE LAST PLAYOFF POSITION:

1 - The team with the greater number of wins shall receive the higher position in the standings.

2 - If two teams are still tied, the team with the best record in head-to-head competition (based on points earned including overtime losses) shall receive the higher position in the standings.

B. TIE IN STANDINGS FOR THE LAST PLAYOFF POSITION:

1 - Between two teams - A sudden-death game shall be played between the two teams. Home Ice advantage in the sudden-death game will be determined by A) above.

2005 WHL PLAYOFF FORMAT

The Western Hockey League playoff format will have the top four teams in each Division (B.C., Central, East, and U.S.) advance to the playoffs.

In both Conferences, the first round match-ups will feature best-of-seven series within each Division. The first place team will play the fourth place team, and the second place team will meet the third place team based on regular season standings.

In both Conferences, the second round match-ups will feature best-of-seven series within the Conference. The four clubs, which win their first round playoff series, will advance to the second round. The first place team will play the fourth place team, and the second place team will meet the third place team based on regular season standings.

In both Conferences, the third round match-up will feature best-of-seven series within the Conference. The two clubs, which win their second round playoff series, will meet with the home ice advantage going to the club with the most regular season points.

In the League Championship, the two Conference Champions will meet in a best-of-seven series with the home ice advantage going to the club with the most regular season points.

As far as the BC div it favors Kootaney right now, the Ice have 43 wins while the Rockets have 40 wins. Kelowna is gonna need some help to finish first.

Yep, Kootenay won't make too many mistakes in the final few games so if they tie, Koots wins the Dub title. How big was that loss in Tri-Cities a few weeks ago and the two ties against Kamloops? HUGE! But there is still hope and a few games yet to be played!

So by this formula, if PG and Kamloops are tied at the end of the season, in all likelyhood PG would have home ice for a one game playoff. That would only happen of course as long as the Cougs don't forget to show up for a game or two.
