SUNRISE, Fla. – Florida Panthers General Manager and Head Coach Jacques Martin announced today that the club has agreed to terms on an entry level contract with RW Michal Repik, the Cats second pick (40th overall) in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

Repik, 18, played in 56 games with the Vancouver Giants this season scoring 24 goals with 31 assists, earning a Memorial Cup Championship, playing alongside Panthers prospect Kenndal McArdle (Florida’s first choice, 20th overall in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft). In the Western Hockey League playoffs, Repik paced his team tallying 26 points (10-16-26) in 22 games played with a +14 rating. In five Memorial Cup contests, Repik registered a tourunament best seven points (3-4-7) including the GWG in the Memorial Cup Championship game, earning him the Ed Chynoweth Trophy as the leading scorer in the tournament.

“Michal has great hockey sense and is a proven winner as evidence by his Vancouver team winning this year’s Memorial Cup,” Martin said. “When we saw Michal still available with the 40th overall pick, we couldn’t pass up this highly talented player. Michal is a smart, two-way player who we look forward to watching develop within our organization.”

The Vlasim, Czech Republic native also was a teammate of Panthers prospect Michael Frolik (Florida’s first choice, tenth overall in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft) while playing for the Czech at the 2007 World Junior Championships.

Florida said that by signing him,it would ensure he returned to the Giants and didn't sign with a Czech pro team.
Congrats to Michal. :)

Good for Reps. The only thing I can think of is that they'd sign him now (and he could get his signing bonus money now) and in turn he'd forgo offers to head back to the Czech Republic this year. There wouldn't seem to be much reason for the Panthers to sign him so soon. Repik has said that he would play next season wherever the Panthers wanted him to, which clearly, is with the Giants.
And those idiots on 1040 today kept referring to him as ex-Giant forward Michal Repik.

great stuff ... well done Florida and good news for us.. and congrats Michal as you deserved the contract no doubt. I think the other teams picking in the second are going to be scratching their heads about letting you slip past in the draft.
