Brandon, Manitoba -- The Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings are pleased to announce that 20-year old right-winger Juraj Simek has come to terms with the National Hockey League's Vancouver Canucks.

A sixth round draft choice of the Canucks in 2006, Simek was Brandon's first round pick (23rd overall) in last summer's Canadian Hockey League Import draft.

In 58 regular season games with the Wheat Kings this past season, the Slovakian born sniper scored 28 goals and 57 points. In nine playoff games, Simek had a goal and six points.

A member of the Swiss National Junior Team at both the 2006 and 2007 World Junior hockey tournaments, Simek could wind up playing the upcoming season with the Canucks' AHL affiliate - the Manitoba Moose.

Simek becomes the fifth Wheat King to sign an NHL contract this summer, joining Codey Burki (Colorado), Ryan Reaves (St. Louis), Dustin Kohn (New York Islanders) and Tyler Plante (Florida Panthers). As well, defenceman Keith Aulie was chosen by the Calgary Flames in last month's NHL Entry Draft.

Financial terms of Simek's new contract were not disclosed.
