BOSTON, MA - Boston Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli announced today that the club has signed forward Milan Lucic to an entry-level contract. Per team policy, terms of the deal will not be disclosed.
"Since being drafted, Milan has shown consistent improvement, which was highlighted by his performance in the Memorial Cup," said Chiarelli. "He also demonstrated his considerable progress during our development camp in July where his size, strength and physical play reinforced everything that led us to select him last year. Though he still could use some improvement in certain areas, he showed us a lot with his offensive production last season. He plays like a prototypical power forward and we are very excited to have him signed."
Lucic, a 6’4”, 220-pound left wing was selected by the Bruins with their third pick (50th overall) in the second round of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft and has played the past two seasons for the Vancouver Giants of the Western Hockey League (WHL).
Last season, Lucic served as an assistant captain and lead Vancouver in regular season scoring with 30 goals and 38 assists for 68 points in 70 regular season games. He also amassed 147 penalty minutes. During the Giant’s run at the 2007 Memorial Cup Championship, Lucic added 19 points and 26 penalty minutes in 22 games.
After lifting the Memorial Cup, the 19-year old was named the Giant’s Most Valuable Player, the team’s Humanitarian and Service award winner and the 2007 Memorial Cup MVP.
During 2005-2006 campaign, the Vancouver, British Columbia native notched nine goals, 10 assists and had 149 penalty minutes in 62 regular season games for the Giants. He also earned seven points and 23 penalty minutes in 18 post-season games as Vancouver captured the 2006 WHL championship.
Lucic spent most of the 2004-2005 campaign with Coquitlam of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL).
Lucic, slated to play for Team Canada in the Under-20 Summit Series between Canada and Russia this September, recently participated in the Bruins Development Camp.
