Stamkos powers Canada
August 12, 2007

PIESTANY, Slovakia (CP) -- Steve Stamkos of the OHL's Sarnia Sting had two goals and three assists to lead Canada past Slovakia 7-6 in an under-18 hockey exhibition game Sunday.

Stamkos and linemates Chris Doyle of the QMJHL's P.E.I Rocket and Jordan Eberle of the WHL's Regina Pats led the way offensively for Canada with 10 points (five goals, five assists). Doyle finished with two goals and an assist while Eberle added a goal and an assist.

"There's a nice blend there," Canadian team coach Dave Barr said of the line. "The two guys that play on the line with Steve really blend well and have a nice blend of skill."

The game was a tuneup for 2007 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka tournament, which will be held in both Hodonin, Czech Republic and Piestany, starting Tuesday and running through Saturday. Canada is in Group A with the Czech Republic, Sweden and Switzerland.

Pool B consists of Finland, Slovakia, the United States and Russia. Canada begins defence of its title Tuesday against Sweden in Hodonin..

Heading into that contest after giving up six goals isn't ideal but Barr, the head coach-GM of the OHL's Guelph Storm, said the Canadian team's miscues against Slovakia can certainly be fixed.

"We got down 2-0 early, which you really don't want to but we battled our way back into it and showed a lot of offensive skills in scoring seven goals," Barr said. "I'd say three of the goals scored against us were bad decisions and unlucky mistakes.

"But that's why the players come to the rink everyday and the coaches have to coach."

Canada 2 - Sweden 3

HODONIN, Czech Republic – Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team outshot and outchanced Sweden on Tuesday night, but it wasn’t enough as Canada suffered a 3-2 shootout loss at the Memorial of Ivan Hlinka.

Kevin King (Calgary, AB/Kootenay, WHL) and Phillipe Cornet (Val d’Or, QC/Rimouski, QMJHL) scored for Canada.

King’s goal came at 16:45 of the first period, when he finished off a nice set up from Kelsey Tessier (Fredericton, NB/Quebec, QMJHL). Nazem Kadri (London, ON/Kitchener, OHL), who was named Canada’s Player of the Game, picked up the other assist on the goal.

Cornet’s goal came at 2:31 of the third period, with Canada on the powerplay. Cody Hodgson (Markham, ON/Brampton, OHL) made a great cross-crease pass to Cornet, who one-timed the puck past Swedish netminder Jacob Markstrom. David Toews (Winnipeg, MB/Shattuck St. Mary’s, USHS) also assisted on the goal.

Sweden, which was outshot 40-31, won in large part due to the work of Markstrom. He made several outstanding saves during the course of the game, but saved his best work for the shootout.

Markstrom stopped Kyle Beach (Kelowna, BC/Everett, WHL), Tessier and Canada’s captain Steven Stamkos (Unionville, ON/Sarnia, OHL) in the shootout.

Peter Delmas (Bedford, NS/Lewiston, QMJHL) matched Markstrom in great play throughout the game. Delmas stopped the first two Swedish shooters – Henrik Bjorklund and Mattias Tedenby – but failed to turn away Sweden’s last shooter, Anton Lander.

Tedenby scored both of Sweden’s goals during regulation time.

Canada earned one point for the shootout loss, while Sweden picked up two points.

Canada returns to the ice on Wednesday against Switzerland (3:30 p.m. local, 9:30 a.m. ET) in Hodonin, before wrapping up the round robin on Thursday against the Czech Republic.

Canada 3 - Switzerland 2

CANADA WINS 3-2 THRILLER OVER SWITZERLAND

HODONIN, Czech Republic – Chris Doyle’s goal at 8:19 of the third period sent a rather large Canadian contingent into a frenzy and the goal stood as the game-winner as Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team beat Switzerland 3-2 on Wednesday.

Canada now has a win and a shootout loss at the 2007 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka, which is being held in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
Doyle, a Charlottetown, PEI native and member of the PEI Rocket of the QMJHL, tipped in a perfect pass from linemate Cody Hodgson (Markham, ON/Brampton, OHL). It was Canada’s second goal in less than a minute. At 7:21, Yann Sauve (Rigaud, QC/Saint John, QMJHL) tied the game at 2-2 when he shovelled the puck over the shoulder of Switzerland goaltender Benjamin Conz.

Team Canada started slow in this game and trailed 2-0 at one point. Switzerland opened the scoring at 16:45 of the first period on a goal by Pascal Gemperli. The Swiss made it 2-0 at the 11:42 mark of the second, when Roman Josi set up Konstantin Schmidt for a goal.

Canada cut into that lead at 15:54. Captain Steven Stamkos (Unionville, ON/Sarnia, OHL) got his team going when he one-timed home a pass from Nazem Kadri (London, ON/Kitchener, OHL). Canada trailed 2-1 going into the third period, but used Stamkos’ late goal for momentum in the third.

Canada stepped it up in the third, taking the play to the Swiss. Peter Delmas (Bedford, NS/Lewiston, QMJHL) earned the win in goal, stopping 21 of 23 shots. Stamkos, who finished with a goal and an assist, was named Canada’s player of the game. Hodgson and Kadri each had two assists.
