Hawks Trade Frazee to Medicine Hat for Swystun and Draft Spot

Friday, August 17, 2007

The Portland Winter Hawks swapped centers with the Medicine Hat Tigers, today, sending 17-year old Thomas Frazee in exchange for 19-year old Tyler Swystun and a fourth round pick in the 2008 Bantam Draft.

A rookie last season, Swystun tallied 12 goals 24 assists for 36 points for the Western Hockey League Champion Tigers. Swystun spent the 2005-06 season playing NCAA hockey for the University of Michigan Wolverines.

A move to Portland will most likely give Swystun the opportunity to see more meaningful ice time and added scoring opportunities as his 36 points would have made him the fourth leading scorer for Portland in 2006-07.

"We are looking forward to Tyler adding his speed, skill and maturity to our line-up this season," Said Hawks General Manager, Ken Hodge.

Hodge said the fourth round pick also fills a need for the team.

"We traded away our 4th round pick in 2008 in a previous trade," Hodge said. "This fills that hole. This pick could also be used to help bring in an additional 20-year old in a future deal."

The Winter Hawks currently have two 20-year old overage players. They are allowed three per season.

Frazee heads to Medicine Hat after scoring 6 goals and 6 assists as a 16-year old rookie last season.

Frazee Out/Swystun In...

It was announced this morning that the Hawks have dealt 17 year old forward Thomas Frazee to the Medicine Hat Tigers for 19 year old forward Tyler Swystun (pictured on the left, photo credit to Eugene Erick, Double E Photography) and a 4th Round Pick in the 2008 Bantam Draft.

Swystun was selected by Prince George in the first round, #6 overall, in the 2003 Bantam Draft, but his rights were traded to Medicine Hat in the deal that sent Brett Robertson and a 4th Round Pick to PG.

Swystun never played in PG, he opted to attend the University of Michigan in the NCAA but left to join the Tigers last season.

Swystun posted 12-24-36 for the WHL Champion Tigers last year but was a bit down on the depth chart on a team loaded with quality forwards. He is known for his speed and offensive abilities and should get an opportunity to be an impact forward on the Hawks roster this season.

Also, having a player who has been a part of a Championship run is a bonus as well.

Frazee is also a former first round bantam pick, going #11 overall to the Hawks in 2005. He impressed immediately when he joined the Hawks late in the 2006 season as a 15 year old call up at the end of the year.

Unfortunately for Thomas his rookie season will remembered more for the off-ice distractions that led to him being sent home in February of this past season than it will be for his on-ice contributions. His 6-6-12 output wasn't bad on a team that struggled offensively last season.

Frazee has the size and skill to be an impact player for the Tigers for a few years and I wish him best of luck as he now starts his career in Medicine Hat.

Welcome Tyler and Go Hawks!

I just finished watching a documentary on SCN this AM about Thomas Frazee. It followed him through his tour with the North Vancouver Winter Club team and then his selection in the bantam draft by the Winter Hawks. He seemed to be a very arrogant and cocky 14 year old with absolutely no idea or regard for the tremendous sacrifice his parents made. After reading that he had been sent home during his rookie season with the Winter Hawks, I couldn't help but feel extremely sad for his parents. Let's hope this kid realizes the opportunity, second chance if you will, he has been given with the Tiger organization. At least for his parents sake anyway.
