Brandon, Manitoba -- The Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings have announced that veteran blueliner Daryl Boyle has been signed to a National Hockey League tryout contract by the Boston Bruins.

A 20-year old native of Lethbridge, Boyle is a 3-year WHL veteran, having been chosen by Brandon in the 9th round (169th overall) in the 2002 bantam draft.

One of four Wheat Kings to play in all 72 regular season games last season, Boyle finished the year with career highs in goals (11), assists (38) and points (49). As well, the 6'1” 195 lb defenceman had 67 minutes in penalties and an impressive +19 ranking.

During his three years in Brandon, Boyle has 21 goals and 90 points in 200 career games.

Boyle will be one of three Wheat Kings that will be attending Brandon's camp this coming week, before heading off to NHL camps early next month. Keith Aulie was chosen by the Calgary Flames in last June's NHL Entry draft while St. Louis has extended a tryout contract to 19-year old center Andrew Clark.

In related club news, Brandon general manager and head coach Kelly McCrimmon has announced that forward Matt Hallick will not be back with the team this season.

“There was a mutual agreement that Matt needed a change,” says McCrimmon. “Matt hasn't lived up to our expectations, or his own, and we felt a trade would be the best solution.”

Hallick, who had just one goal and 8 points in 50 games last season, will remain in Medicine Hat awaiting a trade and will not participate in Wheat Kings' training camp.

Following Rookie registrations on Tuesday, training camp scrimmages will begin Wednesday with the 5-day camp scheduled to end on Sunday, September 2nd with the Wheat Kings' annual Intrasquad game.

Brandon will play two pre-season home games - Saturday, September 8th vs. Swift Current and Friday, September 14th against the visiting Regina Pats. Tickets to both pre-season games go on sale Monday, August 27th at 10 a.m.

I'm happy and sad with this news...Glad for Boyle because he is under rated, but a little worried because we would be very much poorer without him in our team!!
