Now it’s time to really get down to business. The 34 players remaining with the Edmonton Oil Kings don’t have much time to relax after a grueling training camp. There are only a few days left to prepare for their Inaugural Pre Season Tournament set for September 1st – 3rd at Servus Credit Union Place. The Oil Kings will host Kamloops, Kelowna, Prince George, Regina and Swift Current in an exhibition series.
The Oil Kings are excited to call St. Albert and Servus Credit Union Place home for the Labour Day weekend. You could be watching the next star of Canada’s world junior hockey team or even some future NHL’ers. This year’s roster will be picked over the next couple of weeks and some players will make it or break it this weekend, plus it will also be a chance for fans to come out and “learn the league”.

“The City of St. Albert and Servus Place will be a perfect fit for the Oil Kings to debut the on-ice product for the first time to local fans. We know the community loves their junior hockey and the new facilities are top notch.” says Oil Kings VP of Business Operations and Alternate Governor Nick Wilson. “I hope lots of people will help us test drive our product and see what the Western Hockey League and Edmonton Oil Kings are all about. Rexall Place will be rockin’ all season long. Get your sneak peak this Labour Day weekend.”

You can purchase a day pass for $10 or watch all 9 scheduled games over the course of the weekend for one low price of $25.

St. Albert, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings Inaugural Pre Season Invitational was a huge success on and off the ice. Great crowds were on hand at Servus Credit Union Place in St. Albert for the entire long weekend including the finale on Monday night. The host Oil Kings capped off an entertaining three days with a 5 – 3 win over the Prince George Cougars.
The home squad found themselves in a hole early for the third straight time this tournament. A slight miscommunication and a bouncing puck from behind the goal line, ended up bouncing off starting goalie Chris Ward and in the net. Prince George defenceman Kalvin Sagert got credit for the goal at the 10:05 mark of the first to make it 1 – 0.
The Cougars defence generated more offence before the period was through. Trevor Bauer’s point shot sailed wide but a lively hop off the end boards gave Alex Poulter a yawning cage and gave the Cougars a 2 nothing lead after one.
Cue the comeback. The Oil Kings got to work early in the second period on the powerplay with a little help from a nasty Prince George turnover. A Cougar defenceman, without a stick and on all-fours, swept a loose puck right on the tape of J-P Szaszkiewicz. His first goal and second point of the tourney made it 2 – 1.
Penalty trouble finally caught up to Prince George later in the period. The Oil Kings didn’t take long to convert their first 5 on 3 powerplay of the game. Brenden Dowd roofed a slapper while he was being knocked down. Matt Swaby earned the only assist on the game tying goal. It was 2 – 2. Then with just 24.4 seconds left in the frame, former Red Deer Rebel Karey Pieper burst down the right wing, faked a shot and slid over a terrific pass to Craig McCallum who finished off the text book 2 on 1 with a tap-in for the Oil Kings first lead of the game.
It was more of the same in the third on another Edmonton powerplay. This time, Dowd’s shot was tipped neatly by McCallum who was able to corral his own rebound and pot his second of the night and third of the tournament. It’s easy to see how he lit up the Midget AAA league in Saskatchewan last season with 85 points in 42 games.
The Cougars made it close midway through the third period when Jordie Deagle found the top corner on Oil Kings reliever Dayln Flette. The one goal deficit set up the pulled goalie for an extra attacker in the last minute which made it easy enough for Craig McCallum to score the first ever Edmonton Oil Kings hat trick! Edmonton’s 5 – 3 win improved their record in their own inaugural tournament to 2 and 1. Earlier in the day, Regina edged Kelowna 3 – 2 while the Swift Current Broncos upset the Kamloops Blazers 3 – 1. The Oil Kings will continue their pre-season with a tilt against the Calgary Hitmen on Saturday, September 8th in Okotoks.

I had the pleasure of catching the game last night. Definitely not quite the excitement of a regular season game, but great to see some kids really pushing it to try and crack the squad.

Awesome to see a hat trick. McCallum seems to have some good hands. Hopefully he can put the puck in the net frequently and this wasn't a once in a lifetime thing. His entire line looked really good and were making things happen.

Can't wait until September 20th!

I went to all the Oil King games at Servus Place and I must say the team looked good.. I was impressed with the play of #27 Tomas Vincour who hails from Brno in the Czech Republic and #23 Craig McCallum from Canoe Narrows,Saskatchewan. They will be the Edmontonians 1-2 punch when it comes to scoring..

I also liked the intensity brought by big Scott Skrudland who enjoys dropping the mits.. and Shayne Neigum who played last season in AAA Midget for Swift Current,SK was all over the place and playing with some intensity although he was prone to taking stupid penalties in tight games... but the intensity is there which is great.

Alex Archibald is Starter and Dalyn Flette is a solid back-up in my opinion. Props to Chris Ward for playing well against Kelowna and he may be the #2 next season.
