OIL KINGS HIT THE ICE!
St. Albert, AB - The new era of the Edmonton Oil Kings has officially begun! A near capacity crowd at Servus Credit Union Place in St. Albert witnessed the first ever pre-season game of the new Western Hockey League franchise. The Oil Kings opened their inaugural Pre Season Invitational with a solid 4 - 2 win over the Kelowna Rockets.

About 1700 fans filled the new Performance Arena in St. Albert to catch a glimpse of their new WHL team and they weren't disappointed. However, the home team didn't make it easy on themselves.

First game jitters and some penalty trouble in the first period had the home team back on their heels a bit. The Rockets jumped out to an early lead when Jesse Paradis cashed in on a juicy turnover in the Oil Kings zone and beat Edmonton starting goalie Alex Archibald with a backhand upstairs. The shorthanded unassisted marker made it 1 - 0 Kelowna.

Scott Skrudland will be the answer to a trivia question for years to come. The 19 year old Winnipeg native scored the first ever Edmonton Oil King goal with a shorthanded marker in the dying seconds of the opening frame to send the teams to the dressing room tied at 1.

Edmonton took over in the second period with top prospect Tomas Vincour taking centre stage. The 16 year old first overall European draft pick notched a pair of goals in the middle frame. His first was on a goal mouth scramble with Braeden Adamyk and Brenden Dowd picking up the helpers. The second came during 4 on 4 play. Former Everett Silvertipp defenceman Tyler Hlookoff launched a terrific blue-line to blue-line pass right on the tape of Vincour who finished off the breakaway with a backhand top shelf to make it 3 - 1 Edmonton.

Rookie Clayton Cumisky strengthened his chances of making the team by adding some insurance for the Oil Kings later in the third period with his first of the tournament. Local products Rhett Rachinski and J-P Szaszkiewicz picked up the assists.

Kelowna's Myles MacRae scored his second of the game in the dying seconds to make it close but it wasn't enough. Edmonton held on for a 4 - 3 win. In the other game, Kamloops edged Regina 2 - 1. Next up for the Oil Kings will be the Kamloops Blazers on Sunday night at 7pm at Servus Credit Union Place.

Just wondering if this is the Chris Ward that is playing for the Edmonton Oil Kings

http://whl.ca/en/stats/player.php?id=24312

The reason why i ask is because on the oil kings trim the roster part of the site they list him as a 90 born but on that link above they list him as a 89 born....

Karl Benke, Lyon Messier, Drew Nichol and Ryan Wilkinson How did they do....

Is Grossman the one that played for Seattle Thunderbirds?

Elias Grossman played for Seattle and Prince George and he is from Alaska.. Got cut by the Oil Kings a few days back.. Wilkinson got sent back to AAA Midget. Benke is a big tought customer who I'd expect to help out in the physical dept. this winter and laying the smack down a few times.. I'm pulling for Messier to make the squad as he played solid in the few games I seen.. and Drew Nichol I think will be back in Bonnyville (AJHL). My 2 Cents.
