Hurricanes Ship Defenceman to Portland

Created: Sep 11, 2007

Lethbridge, AB – Hurricanes General Manager Roy Stasiuk announced the details of a trade completed Tuesday with the Portland Winter Hawks. The Canes acquired a conditional 6th round Bantam Draft pick in 2008 from the Winter Hawks in exchange for defenseman Todd Panchyson (http://whl.ca/en/stats/player.php?id=23581) (PAN-Shiss-on).

Panchyson was acquired last season from the Saskatoon Blades in exchange for a 7th round pick in the 2007 WHL Bantam Draft. He then left the Hurricanes midway through last season for personal reasons, but returned to training camp as promised. He played 23 games in a Canes jersey last year, tallying up four points (2G, 2A) a plus/minus rating of plus-4 and 18 PIMs.

“This is a move which I see as a win-win situation. Though Todd’s maturity and responsibility on the blue line will be missed, this is an opportunity for him to step up and take on an even bigger role in Portland.” said Stasiuk adding “I think it also speaks positively about our confidence in the depth of our blue line with returnees Ben Wright (http://whl.ca/en/stats/player.php?id=24053), Travis Bobbee (http://whl.ca/en/stats/player.php?id=24552), Jesse Craige (http://whl.ca/en/stats/player.php?id=24274), Mitch Versteeg (http://whl.ca/en/stats/player.php?id=24716) and Ryan Kerr (http://whl.ca/en/stats/player.php?id=24245). A group which has only been bolstered by our rookies, Brennan Yadlowski, Brock Sutherland and CHL Import Draft pick Luca Sbisa.”
