Game Recap – Regina Pats @ Prince Albert Raiders (Sept 21/07)

The Regina Pats started the 2007-08 regular season on a winning note Friday, when they defeated the Prince Albert Raiders by a score of 4-2.

The hometown Raiders came out of the gate quick, beating Pats goaltender Linden Rowat just 3:57 into the 1st period. The Pats would tie it up before the 1st was over when, 2nd year forward Jared Jagow scored on the power play. The Pats would take their first lead of the hockey game when, Michael MacAngus notched his 1st of the season, and the Pats would lead after two periods.

Going into the final frame with the lead the Pats needed to stay discipline, but an early Brett Leffler high sticking penalty proved to be costly, as Andy Smith scored to tie the game at two. Then half way through the 3rd period, defencemen Nick Ross would score the eventual game winner, from Troy Ofukany and Kirt Hill. The Pats would add one more for insurance, as Jordan Eberle beat Raiders goalie Dustin Butler to make it a 4-2 final.

The Pats will now prepare for the their Home Opener, as the same Prince Albert Raiders will make their way to the Queen City, Sunday at 2:00 pm.

Awesome, first win of the season! Can't wait till Sunday!

On a terrible note...Saulietis is out for 8-12 weeks with a shoulder separation. On his first shift I guess too. That's kind of a kick in the face.

It sounds as if one of your boys, Reich I think, gave Palazzo a pretty good beating last night as well. I've never thought too much of Palazzo, he seems to want to be a heavy weight but doesn't have much to back up his mouth. Good job Reich! applause

Ross lifts Pats to victory

The Leader-Post
Published: Saturday, September 22, 2007

Nick Ross didn't waste any time making an impact for the Regina Pats.

The 18-year-old defenceman broke a 2-2 draw at 10:37 of the third period, helping Regina open the WHL regular season with a 4-2 win over the home-town Prince Albert Raiders on Friday night.

"This has always been a tough building to play," said Pats GM Brent Parker. "They have a big physical hockey club. It's a division game so to go on the road and get one right off the hop is a nice way to start."

Ross and fellow defenceman Logan Pyett made their debuts after returning Wednesday from NHL training camps. They'll be front and centre when the Pats and Raiders meet again Sunday afternoon for the Pats' home-opener (2 p.m. , Brandt Centre).

"They're elite players," noted Parker. "They do so many things well that they make things easier for the other guys around them. As a group I thought our defensive core played very well."

Ryan DePape gave Prince Albert its only lead of the game when he opened the scoring at 3:57 of the first period.

Jared Jagow's power-play marker knotted the score 1-1 after 20 minutes. Michael MacAngus gave Regina the lead 3:50 left in the second frame.

Andy Smith tied it up on the power play 4:04 into the third period, but subsequent goals from Ross and Jordan Eberle provided the margin of victory. Eberle also finished with an assist.

Pats goaltender Linden Rowat stopped 22 shots. Dustin Butler made 32 saves in a losing cause.

Regina went 1-for-10 on the power play. P.A. was 1-for-5.

"Obviously there were some early season mistakes at times but we did some real good things," added Parker. "Our pace and tempo was good throughout. You know coming in you're going to have to withstand that first 10 minutes from a home team in their home-opener. They came hard and we were able to get out of that down just one. We did some good things and got a lot of good efforts from a lot of guys."

Elsewhere on Friday, Matt Tassone's goal at 2:36 of overtime lifted the visiting Swift Current Broncos to a 3-2 win over the Moose Jaw Warriors.

Jordan Knackstedt and Martin Filo scored for the Warriors. Eric Doyle and Zack Smith replied for the Broncos.

In Brandon, Daniel Bartek had two goals and one assist as the Brandon Wheat Kings dumped the visiting Saskatoon Blades 5-2.

EXTRAS: The Pats' win was tempered by news that RW Kaspars Saulietis suffered a "badly separated" shoulder early in the first period. "It's going to be a while," said Parker ... Pyett, a Balgonie resident, made his debut as the Pats' captain ... Regina's Mike Reich and Justin Palazzo of the Raiders dropped the mitts just five minutes into the game ... Pats C Kirt Hill (shoulder) returned to the lineup after missing the entire preseason ... D Spencer Fraipont (wrist) sat out for the Pats, who also scratched three rookies: C Matt Strueby, LW Rudolf Cerveny and D Alex Pym ... The Pats announced Friday afternoon that just over 4,500 tickets had been sold for Sunday's home-opener ... Regina won the season series against P.A. last season with a 5-1-0-2 record.
