Cougars Add Netminder

PRINCE GEORGE, BC- The Prince George Cougars have announced the addition of 19 year old goaltender Tommy Tartaglione (“Tar-Tag-Lee-Oh-Nee) from the Edmonton Oil Kings in exchange for a Conditional 6th Round Bantam selection in 2009.

Tartaglione, a 5’10”, 190 lbs. product of Harbour City, CA, back stopped 22 games for the Regina Pats last season, registering 10 wins (3 shutouts), 5 losses, and 1 OTL. He finished up the season with a 2.88 GAA, and 89.90 save %.

With the addition of Tartaglione, the Cougars now have 3 goaltenders on their active roster. The Cougars expect Tartaglione to join them in Chilliwack tomorrow.

What does this mean for CYR and Danyluk? I don't like this acquisition one bit.

This trade raises some questions. If the Cougars were genuinely attepting to rebuild for the future, one would think trading away a draft pick for a 19 yr old would be out of the question. I don't understand this trade.

Trade Cyr for a higher than a 6th round pick, Let Tommy take the lead in net for the next 2 seasons backed up by the rookie easing him into more and more games and hopefully with some wise drafting that higher pick turns into a nice piece of your puzzle in a couple years.

Or at least that is what I make of this situation.

Maybe they believe that, like the 3 or 4 teams that had him before, he could develop into a starting goaltender....

Yeah, but who is in the market for a 20 yr old goaltender?

Tommy is a pretty good goalie. He was screwed in the whole Slade episode along with Chad Scarff. Chad was released to make room on the OA roster and Tommy was moved to a team so he could develop rather than being the 3rd string goalie. Giants really had his best interests in mind and would have hung onto him if Slade had of left at the start of the season.

Portland? Cyr could be like Neufeld last year for the Giants. Give Mucha some nights off of the shelling that the young Hawks D will give up.

They have a good crop of younger players and could afford to give up say a 2nd round pick.

He was screwed in the whole Slade episode along with Chad Scarff.Had no idea that Slade went back to Regina after he left the Giants, and then to the Oil Kings training camp. :D I guess what I am saying is, that while he might have gotten a raw deal in Vancouver due to Slade, he really hasn't been able to really stick at any of the other teams that he has wound up at for whatever reason.

Clearly, the Cougars lack some sort of idea on which way they'd like to move forward at the goaltending position. Last year was a revolving door..... Bringing back what's his face was now, a stupid move. I don't buy the Portland thing as I think they are carrying three goalies. They must be putting their eggs in the Cyr basket as they did last year. He will win them at least one playoff round as he did last season. If they can get there. Kelowna will be the odd man out in the playoff race unless lightning strikes. It must be a move for the future. Curious to note that last year's castoff, Jordan White, is now in Portland. Third star in their loss to Chilliwack last weekend. Hopefully, this is the decision and they will stick with it......clearly this rant lacks direction...just as the Cougar's goaltending decision making process.....

Looking at the performances so far, Cyr has NOT proven himself as being the number one guy. Danyluck stands on his head and gets demoted back to the SJHL for his efforts. As much as I like Real, he has to pull his head out of his a$$ and play like he should be able to. In three games so far the only thing I've seen him do is lose the confidance of the players infront of him. If he wants to stay, he needs to pull it together. This being his 5th year in the Dub, he honestly hasn't been able to hang onto the number one job, and seems to always need to be challenged by someone. We saw it last year when they cut Bowels lose. Cyr was handed the starter job, floundered, and didn't put it back together until Scotty came back. Almost like deja vu. I do think Danyluck could have pushed harder, if he were given the chance. Now with Tommy T here, we could have a strong tandem again. Both these guys have to work together and both have to prove themselves to the young and fragile team infront of them.

I'm sure Real is completely aware of his inconsistent, if not horrible play thus far. This young man went back to PG this year ready to go and in incredible shape. I can't even imagine how terrible he must feel. I don't think he really is doing any one thing horribly wrong, but a number of small things add up to 3 consecutive losses and a really bad save percentage and goals against average. One thing he certainly does not need is for the fans to get on his back. We owe him more than that.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not meaning to get on his back, but maybe someone should. Be it coaches, or other players (vets/captain/assistants). His play has been horrible, and the team plays like they are afraid to let him see the puck and that is adding up to a lot of mistakes and lopsided scores. IMO, Drew should have at least called a time out early to get him settled down, or pull a Constantine and switch goalies to get/extend the time outs. Either way Real has to get, and keep, his head in the game and not get rattled by some of these soft goals.

I couldn't agree more with your opinion. You have to wonder what the acquisition of Tartaglione and re-assignment of Danyluk has done to his confidence. Believe you me, no one is harder on CYR than CYR. I'm sorry if I came across as scolding you for having an opinion. I certainly didn't intend for that tone.

NP Westleaf. No one wants Real, or the Cougars, to do well and improve more than me. I have a feeling tho, that it is going to be just one of those seasons.

Could this be the year where the Brodskys make a firm commitment to sell or move? With this being a rebuild year the stands are going to be bear. On top of that the new sports centre will be cutting into the pie.

New goalie adds colour to Cats

(Sports) Monday, 01 October 2007, 23:43 PST
JIM SWANSON, Citizen Sports Editor

The first hints that Tommy Tartaglione is a California kid come not from his flowing locks -- they are black, not blond -- or the Italian last name that’s more suited to New Joysey than Long Beach.

Nope. The first proof he’s a SoCal guy is the South High Ice Hockey hoodie.

Yes, ice hockey. Not simply ‘hockey,’ the way a rink rat from Moose Jaw would say it. Ice hockey is a phrase he uses himself.

“There’s two different types of hockey -- road hockey and ice hockey,” explained the 19-year-old goaltender, acquired last week by the Prince George Cougars to give incumbent starter Real Cyr more than a gentle nudge in practice.

“I have to make sure everyone knows what I’m talking about. South High is my school -- they wouldn’t let me be the goalie, though, because it’s more rec, so I was a defenceman and led the team in penalties. I was a power-play specialist, stand in front of the net and tip in point shots. I got eight or nine that way.”

He won’t have to do that for the Cougars. Though Prince George head coach Drew Schoneck wouldn’t commit, those who head to CN Centre for tonight’s game against the Tri-City Americans -- plenty of prime seats available -- can expect to see Cyr on the bench watching Tartaglione get his first start as a Cougar.

Cyr has been torched for all three losses through the early days of the regular season, and he only finished one of them. His 8.26 goals-against average and .786 save percentage are screaming for a breather.

“I haven’t made the call (on tonight’s starter) yet,” said Schoneck. “Tartaglione came in and did a great job after Real was kicked out. He’s animated, he moves the puck well -- we’ve already nicknamed him Denis Lemieux (from Slapshot). He’s been on some teams and learned what it takes to play, and we want him to come in and push Real to make each other better.

“He’s happy to be here. I know in the past sometimes when a guy gets traded up here it’s like a death sentence, but he couldn’t be happier. He just wants an opportunity.”

Tartaglione, the fourth Californian and fifth American on the roster, has been labeled many things in his junior career -- among them, unorthodox, flamboyant, mobile and enthusiastic.

“My favourite one is, ‘makes the save,’” said the former high school football defensive back.

“A buddy of mine told me their scouting report said: ‘No style, but does what he can to make the save.’ That describes me right there.”

Tartaglione, who hails from Harbour City, Calif., which is next to Long Beach, is with his fourth WHL franchise. He arrived as a Vancouver Giant, was traded to the Regina Pats when he got caught in the crossfire of the Dustin Slade controversy, and was picked up by the expansion Edmonton Oil Kings over the summer. After being cut by Edmonton, Tartaglione was in Surrey getting icetime with the BCHL Eagles, awaiting a new WHL home.

He met up with the Cougars in Chilliwack on Thursday night, and has fit in well. The personable netminder has been called “a good teammate” by former organizations.

“I’ve been caught behind 17-year-olds my entire life, someone younger than me, so it’s nice to finally be the younger guy and get the chance to have someone mentor me,” he said.

Tartaglione stopped all 10 shots he faced in Saturday’s 6-4 loss, jumping the boards after Cyr engaged in a mid-ice scrap with Bruins starter Matt Esposito.

“It was nice to come into a no-pressure situation and get the rust out,” said Tartaglione, who posted good numbers for Regina last winter -- 10-6 with three shutouts, a 2.88 goals-against average and 89.9 save percentage.

“I was watching the line brawl, saw some good fights, then all of a sudden I saw Cyrsie going, and he was on top of the guy, just pummeling him. It gave me a laugh and took all the pressure off.”

Tommy T is a real character. A good, no great, teamate. He is as much fun to watch on the bench as he is on the ice. He just wants to get better. Moves the puck really well for a junior aged player.
If you get a chance to talk to him, he is a really nice kid. Better yet, take your kid to meet him (boy or girl). He has a way with kids. I think the fans will really love the guy.

Most major junior players are great with kids. Nice to have role models in the league.
