Huska wants more from his forwards

Kelowna Rockets head coach Ryan Huska has no immediate beefs with his defensive corps.

He does, however, want a lot more out of his forwards as the Rockets venture into two of the Western Hockey League’s toughest buildings this weekend—tonight in Everett against the Silvertips and Saturday against the Giants in Vancouver.

“We need to play with a lot more intensity and play hard and greasy against the better teams in the league,” said Huska.

“We have to get the kids understanding they’re going to need to play that way when we’re on the road.

“That’s how you compete with these teams.”

The Rockets are coming off a 2-1 loss at the hands of the defending Memorial Cup champions Wednesday night at Prospera Place.

Kelowna hung tough for the better part of two periods, and held a 1-0 lead early in the third period on a goal by Cody Almond.

But the Giants took over in the last 16 minutes of the game out shooting the Rockets 17-7 and scoring the final two goals.

Huska said it was the result of a letdown by his team’s forward lines.

“I thought our goalie (Kris Westblom) played great, our defense competed really hard, but in the third our forwards just didn’t bring that same type of intensity,” Huska said.

“The Giants really elevated their game after our goal and we didn’t match that.”

The Rockets missed blue line leader Luke Schenn for the third period of Wednesday’s game. Schenn went to the dressing room late in the second after taking a hit from Vancouver’s Ian Henry, but as of Thursday noon an injury to his neck area wasn’t considered serious with his playing status being day-to-day.
