ICE 4, BLADES 3 (OT)

HURRICANES 3, BLADES 1

Aided by a controversial goal, the Kootenay Ice edged the Saskatoon Blades 4-3 in overtime Sunday.

The Blades finished 0-for-3 on a three-game trip through the WHL's Central Division. Saskatoon lost 3-1 Saturday in Lethbridge.

"We played extremely well again," Blades coach-GM Lorne Molleken said Sunday from Cranbrook, B.C. "We had all kinds of opportunities throughout the game to put it away and we couldn't find it to go up two goals."

The Blades (1-4-1-0) never trailed until Steele Boomer scored at 3:39 of overtime. Saskatoon native Steve DaSilva scored a power-play goal, with 4:07 left in regulation, to keep the Ice (2-4-0-0) alive.

"In our last four hockey games, we competed extremely hard and we should have more to show for it," said Molleken.

Saskatoon led 1-0 late in the first period when controversy arose. Kootenay forward Dustin Sylvester got credit for a goal with 1:18 left in the frame, but it was not immediately recognized. The goal-light went on, but the on-ice officials ordered play to continue. At the next stoppage, referees conferred with the goal judge and awarded Kootenay a goal.

"The puck hit the post and the next time anybody saw it, it was on the outside of the net, on the other side," said Molleken. "The goal judge flipped the light on and then flipped it off right away. The referee was right there. Nobody in the whole rink saw it go in the net except for the goal judge."

Saskatoon retook the lead 36 seconds into the second period on a short-handed goal by Jyri Niemi, his second tally of the night. However, Sylvester bagged his second of the game just 45 seconds later.

Blades winger Derek Hulak broke the 2-2 tie 30 seconds into the third period. Saskatoon nursed that advantage until DaSilva evened the score in the final five minutes.

The Blades outshot their opponents for the second game in a row. Saskatoon's Garrett Zemlak made 22 saves, while Kootenay's Thomas Heemskerk stopped 26.

CRAIGE LIFTS LETHBRIDGE

On Saturday, the Blades clawed back only to see their efforts vanquished. Defenceman Stefan Elliott's first WHL goal pulled the Blades into a 1-1 tie with 48 seconds remaining in the middle period. However, a third-period power-play goal by Jesse Craige broke the deadlock. Zach Boychuk sealed victory with an empty-netter.

ICE CHIPS: Homegrown D Brendon Wall, 17, made his WHL debut Saturday with the Blades . . . Two Saskatonians, C Kyle Bortis and RW Keegan Dansereau, were involved in a three-way trade Saturday. The Swift Current Broncos sent Bortis, 19, and D Paul Postma, 18, to the Calgary Hitmen in exchange for Dansereau, 19, and D Brett Plouffe, 18. The Broncos then shipped Plouffe to the Tri-City Americans for overage LW Erik Felde.
