First injury of the season a shoulder problem for import centre Kupec

The Prince George Cougars have their first injuries of the season.

One will keep a player off the ice for four weeks, the other will keep the coach from making full use of the chalkboard.

Head coach Drew Schoneck spent too many hours last weekend in a Chilliwack hospital when an old playing injury, to his right wrist, caused him pain. It’s a scafoid-type problem that may require casting.

But that’s not the one that matters most. Rookie import Jan Kupec could miss as long as six weeks because of a suspected separated shoulder. The 17-year-old Czech suffered the injury on Saturday in Chilliwack, and is walking around in a sling.

“It looks like it could be about a four-week thing,” said Schoneck, whose team plays host to Don Nachbaur and the Tri-City Americans tonight at CN Centre.

“He won’t be back this week for sure. Other than that and the regular scuffs and bruises, everyone is good. With the youth of this group, we don’t need to go through that injury bug.”

After the Cougars and Americans close out their doubleheader Wednesday, Swift Current arrives for a Saturday game (7 p.m.) and the Calgary Hitmen, top-ranked in the latest WHL Writers Poll, are here Sunday (6 p.m.). What follows that is a six-game, nine-sleep trip through Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

n The Kelowna Rockets got good news Sunday when 18-year-old forward Jamie Benn left the BCHL’s Victoria Grizzlies for the WHL team. The Rockets have been looking for offence, and adding a 42-goal scorer won’t hurt. Benn, six-foot-two and 185 pounds, was the BCHL’s rookie-of-the year last season.

GAMEDAY

PRINCE GEORGE -- The Cougars are looking for their first point of the season, and have yet to hold a lead in any of the games. Their last outing was a 6-4 loss in Chilliwack on Saturday, a game they trailed 5-1 in the first before making it interesting... Believe it or not, despite not having a point, the Cougars are tied for the final Western Conference playoff spot with Everett and Portland... This is not the worst start in team history. The 2002-03 Cougars were 0-4 off the line. That team dropped five of its first six and 12 of its first 16... The Cats are ranked 21st in the latest WHL Writers’ Poll... Dana Tyrell returned in fine form, scoring two goals and adding an assist... Expect newly-acquired G Tommy Tartaglione to get his first start as a Cougar... C Jan Kupec (shoulder) won’t play, no other injuries... Line combinations used in Monday’s practice -- Greg Gardner with Tyrell and Alex Poulter; Evan Fuller, Corey Tyrell and Chad Hohmann; Dale Hunt, Colin Haas and Jordie Deagle; and other forwards wore the fourth-liners’ grey jerseys... Expect to hear soon that the Cougars have signed four of last year’s bantam draft picks.

TRI-CITY -- The Don Nachbaur-coached Americans are coming off a 3-1 road win over Portland, and are here for back-to-back nights. The 4-0 start is the best in franchise history, which dates back 20 years. The Ams have at least one power-play goal in all four games, and are operating at 32.1 per cent in that department... Former Ams G Carey Price was given an NHL roster spot with the Montreal Canadiens on Monday. The new net starter for Tri-City is Chet Pickard, 18... C Kruise Reddick, 17, leads Tri-City in points with nine (two goals, seven assists), and D T.J. Fast has seven points, including six helpers... The Americans added 18-year-old D Brett Plouffe from Calgary on the weekend in a three-way deal. Tri-City sent Erik Felde, 20, to Swift Current. The Hitmen unloaded Keegan Dansereau on Swift Current, while the Hitmen got D Paul Postma and F Kyle Bortis... C Jason Reese, added last week from Moose Jaw, had three assists in his first game for Tri-City.
