Broncos bomb Bengals

The Medicine Hat Tigers finally felt their early season growing pains.
On Saturday, the Tigers were bombed 7-2 by the visiting Swift Current Broncos before a sellout crowd of 4,006 fans at The Arena.
While the home side played a spirited first period, the rest of the match was pretty much all Swift Current.
“I can’t even remember the last time we got beat this bad, especially in our own barn,” said 19-year-old defenceman and assistant captain Jordan Bendfeld, whose team’s record fell to 2-1-1. “We disappointed our fans today. It seemed like they were half as loud.
“We have to make this team a whole much better for them. We are known around the league for having a good crowd and a good home ice advantage. We have to take advantage of that.”
The Tigers actually took it to the Broncos in the first period out shooting the visitors 13-4. Broncos goaltender Travis Yonkman kept the home side off the scoreboard.
The visitors then took a 1-0 lead at the 10:10 mark of the opening frame. Newly acquired right-winger Keegan Dansereau, who was with the Calgary Hitmen, leveled Tigers rearguard Matthew Konan at the side of the Medicine Hat net.
The puck slipped off Konan’s stick right to Broncos centre Matt Tassone, who bagged his first marker of the season.
Left-winger Geordie Wudrick scored at the 17-second and 2:14 marks of the second period. Levi Nelson followed with a goal at the 5:22 mark to make the score 4-0, and the route was on.
“We played well really early,” said Tigers head coach and general manager Willie Desjardins. “The first period I think was the best period we had all year.
“We didn’t capitalize. We gave them one goal on an easy play. After that, we got caught right at the start of the second. That was probably the one that hurt us the most.
“I hope we get better out of game like this. We can’t make mistakes. We have to get better.”
Eric Doyle, Czech import forward Jan Dalecky and Nelson rounded out Swift Current’s scoring the rest of the way. Doyle and fellow defenceman Michael Wilson each tallied three assists in the win. Yonkman made 28 saves to earn the win in goal.
After the game, Broncos head coach and general manager Dean Chynoweth, who is also a Tigers alumnus, joked he couldn’t remember the last time his team could watch a movie on the bus trip home to celebrate a road win in Medicine Hat. He also added caution saying the win wasn’t as good as it appeared.
“It is good for their confidence,” said Chynoweth, whose team improves to 2-1. “Early in the season, you have to keep so many things in check with the confidence of these young men and getting over confident.
“I thought we really had to weather the storm early. They out shot us badly, and we leave that (first) period up 1-0. Yonkman made some real key saves for us.”
Tyler Ennis and Brennan Bosch each netted a single for the Tigers in the loss. Czech import goaltender Tomas Vosvrda started the game in goal and was pulled after allow four goals on 11 shots. Second year man Ryan Holfeld came in for relief and stopped nine of 12 shots fired his way.
In the Tigers next outing this coming Tuesday against the Prince Albert Raiders at 7 p.m. at The Arena, Bendfeld said the team’s leaders, like himself, need to be the difference.
“All the leaders that we had last year they know better than to let you get beat 7-2 in your own barn,” said Bendfeld. “We just have to make sure we come out with a better effort.”
