The Leader-Post
Published: Friday, October 05, 2007
MOOSE JAW (0-1-2-0) at REGINA (3-2-0-0)

Today, 7 p.m., Brandt Centre

Radio: 620 CKRM

Key injuries: REGINA -- LW Troy Ofukany (knee, indefinite); MOOSE JAW -- F Brad Reige (knee, day-to-day).

Overview: The Warriors and Pats renew their storied rivalry with the first of eight regular-season meetings . . . Last season, the Pats captured the Mayors Cup trophy for the first time in four years, edging Moose Jaw 5-4 in the season series . . . Moose Jaw's lineup features several new acquisitions, including C Joel Broda (acquired from Tri-City for Jason Reese), gritty ex-Pats LW Terrance Delaronde (from Kamloops), RW Martin Filo (CHL import draft) and veteran D Brett Ward (from Saskatoon) . . . The Warriors have scored the fewest goals in the Eastern Conference (eight), but possess a gifted group of forwards who could break out at any time . . . Much like his team, Regina-born sniper Riley Holzapfel has yet to get on track, scoring just one goal in three games. Broda leads the way with three goals and one assist, followed by Jordan Knackstedt (2-2--4) . . . F Kirt Hill and D Juraj Valach lead Regina with five points apiece . . . Top goal-scorer Jordan Eberle (2-2--4) is slated to return after missing two games with tonsillitis . . . The battle of the goalies is between Regina's Linden Rowat (3-1 record, 1.66 GAA) and Moose Jaw veteran Joey Perricone (0-1-2-0, 3.57 GAA).

Even if the numbers were all in favour of Rowat it isnt much of a battle between those too...... i know warrior fans who would want any goalie besides the 1 they got lol

Perricone isnt going to steal too many games for the warriors

We'll have to see what happens tonight. It's obviously not 2006 anymore. Joey is capable of stealing games, but he hasn't exactly been lights out so far. Should be a good game tonight though.

Perricone is a good goaltender, just like Rowat. But also like Rowat, he is inconsistant. On and off. If the pats can get to him early, and also keep the puck away from their dangerous offence, we should be able to win the game.

Perricone is better than Rowat in more ways than one. I love watching Eberle play, got the hatty already tonight. He's going to score 50 goals either this year or next year, love the kids speed.

too bad its not the 06 playoffs anymore though hey.... plus he had a team who could play infront of him as well....

so my question to the warrior fans... after seeing a article in the moose jaw times herald when Perricone won the job over Jory.... are the warriors fans still happy with Perricone (a floater beats Perricone in OT against calgary, and 4 goals in a period and a half against the Pats)

Hats off for Pats' Eberle

Greg Harder, Leader-Post
Published: Saturday, October 06, 2007

Jordan Eberle has a gift for tonsil hockey.

The super-sophomore made a timely return Friday night after missing two games with tonsillitis, potting a hat trick in the Regina Pats' 4-2 win over the arch-rival Moose Jaw Warriors before 5,080 fans at the Brandt Centre.

Despite his brief absence from the lineup, Eberle now leads the Pats with five goals and two assists in four contests.

"Coming into the game I was just really excited to play and I think that helped out there," said Eberle, who paced Regina last season with 28 goals in 66 games as a 16-year-old rookie. "When you have (nights) like this, the bounces just go your way. The second goal I just tried to feed it to (Tim Kraus) and it hit the guy's pad. I don't know how that went in."

Either way, it did.

The end results saw the Warriors stretch their season-opening winless skid to four games. Each of their previous losses was by one goal, including two overtime contests.

That streak ended Friday, although two late goals helped the visitors make a game of it.

"We haven't played a complete game yet," lamented Dave Hunchak, who is still looking for his first win as the Warriors' head coach. "We just didn't play with the emotion and the jump we needed to play with, especially with this rivalry. I think the shots ended up being 22-7 (in favour of Moose Jaw) in the second half of the game. We're capable of going, it's just the first half we stood around. It was almost like we were in awe of the mighty Regina Pats."

Eberle opened the scoring midway through the first period when he took advantage of a 2-on-1 break, whistling a wrist shot past goaltender Joey Perricone. Eberle had Perricone beat again with 1:50 left in the frame, but this time he struck iron.

Pats goaltender Linden Rowat was the beneficiary of an 11-3 edge on the shot clock after 20 minutes. His only tough save came on Jason Bast's breakaway in the final 30 seconds.

Eberle made it 2-0 just 1:07 into the second period, followed by the second goal in as many games by Czech rookie Rudolf Cerveny. Eberle completed the hat trick at 11:24 by polishing off a pretty three-way passing play with Kraus and Michael MacAngus. It was his second power-play marker of the night.

Bast spoiled Rowat's shutout bid on the two-man advantage at 12:26 of the third. On the same power play, Brett Ward's point shot through traffic beat Rowat to make things interesting -- a little too interesting.

"Moose Jaw leaves here with some life and that's unacceptable," barked head coach Curtis Hunt. "We had a great opportunity to really pound in the message and didn't do it. We understand as a group that we can be better, but the result is what we're judged on. We get the win and hopefully learn a lesson."

The final shots were 25-25 while each team went 2-for-8 on the power play.

The Pats (4-2-0-0) are slated to hit the road this weekend for games against the expansion Edmonton Oil Kings on Sunday and the Saskatoon Blades on Monday. Moose Jaw visits the defending WHL-champion Medicine Hat Tigers tonight.

EXTRAS: The Warriors scratched high-scoring RW Brady Calla due to an apparent illness ... The Pats were without LW Troy Ofukany (knee), plus three healthy scratches: D Alex Pym, D Curtis Kulchar and F Cody Hanson, who was acquired Tuesday from the Seattle Thunderbirds ... Pats D Matt Delahey dished out two huge hits in the first period, including an open-ice effort on ex-Pats tough guy Terrance Delaronde. Delaronde was later tossed for charging Delahey, inciting a minor brawl. Delahey, who wears No. 7, was bloodied but returned wearing a fresh No. 20 jersey.

Regina 4 Moose Jaw 2
The Regina Pats won the first of eight games against the Moose Jaw Warriors by a 4-2 count Friday night.

5,080 fans were dazzled by Pats 17-year old phenom Jordan Eberle who netted a hattrick on the evening. It upped his team-leading stats (5-2-7), and tied him with Cody Gross for the team lead in powerplay goals (2). Rudoplh Cerveny had the other Pats marker, his second of the season.

The Pats lead 1-0 and 4-0 by periods, and the shots ended up tied 25-25. The Warriors outshot the Pats 11-5 in the third, where they netted two goals with the man advantage.

"Well we were happy with the win but we learned again we have to play 60 minutes," said Pats ass't coach Terry Perkins, whose team also allowed to third period goals in their last win, 3-2 over Calgary on Sunday, "We seemed to let up when we got up 4-0 and took some lazy penalties in the third period that cost us."

Both teams were 2/9 on powerplays by my count. Regina was 31/65 on faceoffs (47%) and but out-hit their opponents 32-28.

At 4-2, they remain tied with Swift Current for first-place in the East Division. The Broncos won 2-1 at Kamloops. The Warriors are still looking for their first win under coach Dave Hunchak (0-2-2), and visit Medicine Hat Saturday. The Pats next game is Sunday at Edmonton (2:00 on 620 CKRM). The Oil Kings beat P.A. 5-4 Friday.

I had to work last night so I gave my tickets away. Sounds like Jordan Eberle didn't miss a beat!

Terry Perkins's quote bothers me a little..."Well we were happy with the win but we learned again we have to play 60 minutes," said Pats ass't coach Terry Perkins, whose team also allowed to third period goals in their last win, 3-2 over Calgary on Sunday, "We seemed to let up when we got up 4-0 and took some lazy penalties in the third period that cost us." I'm not terribly concerned, but if you have to learn it again, did you ever really learn it in the first place?

I was very impressed with the Pats play last night...except in the 3rd. You can tell they have gelled more and doing a lot more with the puck. I was so impressed with a lot of the passing and the plays that were being set up. The teams potential and praise is starting show! Cerveny is damn good as well. Still has some learning to do, but once he learns a bit more, he is going to be one of the Pats best players. He has so much skill. And Eberle...well, he will more than likely be one the leagues top players next year. The things he does seem so effortless to him. And Mitchell...he is probably my favourite player on the team. 17 and is making great plays, hits hard, and as we learned in the Red Deer game...will stand up for his team. He will be a force to reckon with in the future. Reminds me of Rypien at that age...but better, and a little bit bigger.

All in all...if the Pats play 60 minutes every game, they will definitely live up to their predicted league rank.

Oh yeah...how about that Delahey? Two HUGE hits! I'm also a lot more impressed with him this season. Last year he was alright, but I didn't think he was the best, but that has changed. He's a great defenceman. Looked like he wanted to kill somebody after being checked from behind as well. Especially with face pretty well covered in blood. Perhaps this game will help spark the old rivalry!
