FRIDAY'S WHL MATCHUPS

GIANTS HOST HITMEN -- The Vanvouver Giants (4-1-1-1) welcome the Calgary Hitmen (9-2-0-0) for a battle between two of the top teams in the League in one of 10 Western Hockey League contests on Friday, October 12th.

The Giants, currently second in the B.C. Division, are coming off a 4-2 defeat at the hands of the Kelowna Rockets on Monday for their third straight setback after opening the season with four straight wins. Rookie Evander Kane has scored three goals and five points in his first seven games of the season.

The Hitmen, currently first overall in the WHL, are coming off a 5-0 defeat in Kelowna on Wednesday for only their second loss of the season. Calgary’s power play has sputtered on the road, going 3-for-44 through their first seven games on enemy ice this season.

It’s the first meeting of the season between the Giants and Hitmen. The Hitmen won both encounters versus the Giants last season.

Elsewhere on Friday night, the Brandon Wheat Kings (5-1-0-0) host the Prince George Cougars (1-6-0-0).

The Wheat Kings, currently first in the East Division, are coming off a 4-3 victory over the Kootenay Ice in Cranbrook on Sunday for their third straight triumph. Tyler Dittmer, the reigning WHL and CHL Player of the Week, has scored five goals and seven points in his last two outings.

The Cougars, currently fifth in the B.C. Division, are coming off a 5-3 loss to the Calgary Hitmen on Sunday for their second straight setback, and have only won once this season. The Cougars have been outscored by a 36-19 margin this season.

It’s the first meeting of the season between the Cougars and Wheat Kings. Brandon won last season’s lone meeting with Prince George.

The Everett Silvertips (2-5-0-0) host the Kamloops Blazers (3-3-0-0) on Friday night.

The Silvertips are coming off a 5-3 win over Portland on Saturday for their second win in their last three games after dropping their first four games of the season. 14 of the Silvertips’ first 21 goals this season have come on the power play.

The Blazers are coming off a 4-2 loss to the Hitmen on Monday for their second setback in their last three games. Brock Nixon tallied six points in his first three games of the season, but has only recorded one assist in his last three outings.

It’s the first meeting of the season between the ‘Tips and Blazers. Everett won all four meetings with Kamloops last season.

The Lethbridge Hurricanes (4-4-0-0) host Central Division rivals the Medicine Hat Tigers (5-2-1-0) on Friday night.

The Hurricanes are coming off a 4-2 victory over the visiting Prince Albert Raiders on Sunday, snapping a two-game losing skid. Rookie defenseman Luca Sbisa has recorded nine assists in his first eight games of the season.

The Tigers are coming off a 2-1 victory in Red Deer on Wednesday for their second straight win. Rookie forward Sean Ringrose has scored four goals and seven points in eight games this season.

It’s the third meeting of the season between the division rivals. The teams split the opening two encounters, with the home team winning on each occasion.

The Prince Albert Raiders (3-5-1-0) welcome the Moose Jaw Warriors (1-3-2-0) for an East Division battle on Friday night.

The Raiders dropped a 4-2 decision in Lethbridge on Sunday to finish their five-game road trip with a 2-3 record. The Raiders have yet to put together back-to-back victories this season.

The Warriors earned their first victory of the season with Wednesday’s 5-2 win over the Kootenay Ice. Moose Jaw has picked up points in each of their first three home games this season, with a win and two overtime setbacks.

It’s the first meeting of the season between the division rivals. Prince Albert won five of eight meetings versus Moose Jaw last season.

The Regina Pats (5-3-0-0) host the Kootenay Ice (3-7-0-0) on Friday night.

The Pats are coming off a 7-3 loss to Saskatoon on Monday, snapping a three-game winning streak. Jordan Eberle has scored five goals and seven points in his last three outings, and shares the WHL lead with seven tallies on the season.

The Ice dropped a 5-2 decision on Moose Jaw on Wednesday night for their second straight loss, and their third setback in four games. Kootenay’s power play has connected just twice in 23 chances through their first five road contests this season.

It’s the first meeting of the season between the Pats and Ice. Kootenay won three of four meetings versus Regina last season.

The Saskatoon Blades (2-4-1-0) welcome the Red Deer Rebels (3-5-0-0) on Friday night.

The Blades pulled off a 7-3 win over division rivals the Regina Pats on Monday, snapping a three-game losing skid. Czech sniper Ondrej Fiala recorded two goals and two assists in his debut for the Blades on Monday after being acquired from Everett.

The Rebels dropped their third straight decision with Wednesday’s 2-1 defeat to Medicine Hat, and have scored only three goals during their three-game slide. The Rebels have won just once in five games on home ice this season.

It’s the first meeting of the season between the Rebels and Blades. Red Deer won all four meetings versus Saskatoon last season.

The Seattle Thunderbirds (2-0-1-1) host U.S. Division foes the Tri-City Americans (7-1-0-0) on Friday night.

The Thunderbirds have been idle since dropping a 4-3 decision in a shootout to Kelowna last Saturday. The Thunderbirds are the only team in the WHL to have not lost in regulation so far this season.

The Americans are coming off consecutive wins over division rival Spokane last weekend, and currently rank second in the WHL standings behind Calgary. Rookie forward Johnny Lazo has scored four goals and seven points in eight games this season.

It’s the first meeting of the season between the T-Birds and Ams. Tri-City won five of eight meetings versus Seattle last season. Four of the eight meetings between the teams last season were decided in overtime or a shootout.

The Spokane Chiefs (3-2-1-1) welcome the Portland Winter Hawks (1-5-0-0) for a U.S> Division battle on Friday night.

The Chiefs dropped a 5-3 decision in Chilliwack on Wednesday and have lost four straight since opening the season with three consecutive wins. The Chiefs have only played one home game this season – a 2-1 shootout defeat to Tri-City.

The Winter Hawks are coming off a 5-3 loss to Everett last Saturday for their fifth defeat in six games this season. Portland has managed just nine goals through their first six games of the season.

It’s the first meeting of the season between the division rivals. Spokane won all eight meetings versus Portland last season.

In other action on Friday night, the Swift Current Broncos (5-2-0-1) make their home debut as they welcome the Edmonton Oil Kings (4-2-0-1).

The Broncos dropped a 3-2 decision in a shootout to the Oil Kings in Edmonton on Wednesday, but finish their season-opening eight-game road trip with five victories. Erik Felde has scored two goals and six points in his first five games as a member of the Broncos.

The Oil Kings defeated the Broncos 3-2 in a shootout on Wednesday for their third home victory of the season. Edmonton has recorded a win and a shootout loss through their first two road contests of the season.

It’s the second meeting of the season between the Broncos and Oil Kings. The teams meet up again in Swift Current on October 27th.

Ok, maybe it's just me, but everyone please take the time to read the quoted news write-up. It's directly off the WHL's website!! I bolded the mistakes I found....as you can see, most of them are in the two paragraphs regarding the Broncos' and Oil Kings matchup last night. It seems whoever wrote this either hasn't a clue, or doesn't give a sh*t about the Broncos. S/he doesn't seem to know when they played last (which in fact is Monday...not Wednesday) and where they play the Oil Kings again...(the Oct. 27th game will in fact be in Edmonton...not S.C.)

Everyone makes mistakes, but come on...get it together!! This is posted on a world-famous junior developement league's official website!
