Saturday . . .
The Saga of Ken Petkau could be a country tune. It really could. . . . Hopefully, it comes to an end sometime next week. . . . If you tuned in late, Petkau left the Chilliwack Bruins on Oct. 3, saying he was retiring to get on with his life. Then, on Thursday, the Vancouver Giants claimed him at the WHL’s 20-year-old deadline. . . . It turns out he was in Oklahoma City, on a tryout with the CHL’s Blazers. . . . But he can’t play there because he hasn’t cleared WHL waivers. . . . So he may be in Chilliwack on Sunday where the Giants are to play the Bruins. . . . Except he can’t play for the Giants until the WHL sorts out this mess, something that hopefully will happen early in the week. . . . In the meantime, there is a delicious game of “He said, he said” being played, all without anyone having spoken with Petkau. . . . The buzz around the league when Petkau, who scored 24 goals last season, left the Bruins was that he wasn’t happy getting third-line ice time. . . . Steve Ewen of the Vancouver Province, on his blog, reports that word in the Giants camp was that Petkau was upset that he hadn’t gotten a promised NHL tryout, something Chilliwack GM Darrell May said he knows nothing about. . . . May told Ewen the Bruins worked to get Petkau a pro look but that no one was interested. . . . The Bruins’ braintrust, meanwhile, is saying that Petkau reported to training camp out of shape and was getting the ice time that he had earned. . . . "He wasn't doing anything for us ... one goal in five games," May told Ewen. "He didn't come to camp in shape. If he went to any NHL camp, how would that have worked?" . . . Of course, there is more to the Giants’ claiming Petkau than meets the eye. As Ewen reported: “It also seemed to be a Giants bid to get back at Chilliwack for taking defenceman Chad Scharff in the overage draft last year and then not pulling off a trade when he wouldn't report to Chilliwack and the Giants had goalie Dustin Slade bolt.” . . . Another intriguing thing about this mess: Petkau, according to May, is represented by David Kaye, a Saskatoon-based agent. He is the father of RW Michael Kaye, 20, who was dropped by the Saskatoon Blades last week. Michael is in Oklahoma City on a tryout with the Blazers. . . .
Ewen also is reporting that Giants D Neil Manning, who is out with a broken wrist, may be injured worse than originally thought. Manning, 16, was injured Oct. 5 against Chilliwack. "Neil saw a specialist and they want to have more of a look at it," Vancouver head coach Don Hay told Ewen. "He might be gone a little bit longer than we first thought." . . .

In Brandon, Matt Lowry and Tyler Dittmer scored second-period goals to erase a 1-0 deficit and give the Wheat Kings a 2-1 victory over the Kootenay Ice. . . . Lowry and Dittmer, who each had a goal and an assist, have six goals apiece for Brandon (6-2-0-0). . . . Dittmer’s goal at 16:23 was the winner. . . . The Ice (3-8-1-0) was outshot 42-18. . . . Brandon D Daryl Boyle left in the third period after blocking a shot with a foot. . . .
In Regina, D Logan Pyett’s third goal of the season, at 9:15 of the second period, gave the Pats a 1-0 victory over the Prince Albert Raiders. . . . G Jeff Bosch stopped 19 shots for his first shutout and first WHL victory. Bosch, a 17-year-old from Martensville, Sask., was 0-2 last season and took an 0-1 record in Saturday’s game. . . .
In Moose Jaw, in a game that featured 103 penalty minutes, the Warriors dumped the Prince George Cougars, 6-2. . . . Czech C Tomas Karpov scored his first three goals of the season for the Warriors, while sophomore D Chad Suer had three assists. . . . G Todd Matthews made 24 saves in posting his first WHL victory. . . . The Cougars, who were 0-for-8 on the PP, took 69 penalty minutes, with 34 going to the Warriors, who were 2-for-7 with the man advantage. . . . The Cougars are 1-1-0-0 on their six-game East Division swing. . . .
In Medicine Hat, the Tigers got a goal and an assist from RW Yashar Farmanara in beating the Edmonton Oil Kings, 6-2. . . . In Swift Current, LW Geordie Wudrick scored his sixth goal of the season at 1:37 of overtime to give the Broncos a 4-3 victory over the Red Deer Rebels. . . . D Michael Wilson had two assists for the Broncos, giving him 16 points, including 15 assists, in 10 games. . . .
In Seattle, C Jeremy Boyer, who scored one goal all of last season, got his fourth in two nights as the Thunderbirds edged the visiting Kamloops Blazers, 2-1. . . . The winning goal came from RW Josh Schappert, who caught the Blazers (3-4-1-0) pinching and went in on a breakaway to score his second goal of the season. . . . Boyer had three goals Friday in a 6-2 victory over the Tri-City Americans. . . . At 4-0-1-1, the Thunderbirds are the only WHL team not to have suffered a regulation-time loss. . . .
In Chilliwack, RW Brandon Campos, whom the Bruins picked up from Everett to fill the void created when the afore-mentioned Ken Petkau left, scored twice in a 2-1 victory over the Calgary Hitmen. . . . Ian Duval gave Calgary a 1-0 lead at 15:47 of the first period with a power-play goal. Campos tied it on a power play at 19:03 of the first period and then scored the eventual game-winner 55 seconds into the second period. . . .
In Everett, the Silvertips scored two more power-play goals in beating the Portland Winter Hawks, 4-1. . . . C Matt Schmermund gave Portland a 1-0 lead early in the second period, only to have C Zach Hamill and RW Dan Gendur scored power-play goals 48 seconds part midway in the period. . . . Gendur had a three-point night as he later added a second goal to close out the scoring. . . . Everett has scored 28 goals this season, 19 of them with the man advantage. . . . RW Kyle Beach had two assists for Everett (4-5-0-0), which has won three straight. . . . Everett was 2-for-5 on the PP; the Winter Hawks (1-7-0-0) were 0-for-5. . . .
