LETHBRIDGE -- The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns dropped the visiting UBC Thunderbirds 5-1 in a spirited Canada West men's hockey game Friday night.

The first period started with a furious pace, with action quickly going end to end. It would be the hosts who would hit the scoreboard first. Steve Zmudczynski broke in from the left wing on a partial break and beat Thunderbird netminder Gerry Festa to the far side to put the Horns up 1-0, 11 minutes in.

The first period ended with the Horns holding the 1-0 lead, however, the visitors held a 15-10 shot advantage. Horns freshman Scott Bowles was stellar in goal, turning away all Thunderbird opportunities.

Bowles held the fort early in the second period as the Thunderbirds applied some pressure, but the Horns would extend their lead to two on a power play just over 13 minutes into the second period. First year Pronghorn Tyler Stella picked up his first CIS goal, collecting a rebound off the back boards and sliding it into the open net.

Just over three minutes later, Horns Captain Shaun Norrie extended the lead to 3, receiving a pass from Stella in the left face off circle and ripping a shot to the top far corner.

The Horns blew the game open in the first twelve minutes of the final frame, scoring twice and extending the lead to 5-0. Jason Roberts tallied on a two man advantage, while Stella picked up his second goal and third point, beating Festa high to the glove side.

The Thunderbird were not without their chances, as they had five powerplays and directed 24 shots towards Bowles but the only thing left to be determined was if Bowles could register his first CIS shutout.

Darrell May spoiled Bowles’ shutout bid with just more than two minutes to play, banging home a loose puck on the power play.

Bowles finished the night with 51 saves, many of the difficult variety, while his counterpart Festa stopped 27 of 32 Horns shots.

With the win the Horns improve to 2-1-0 and the Thunderbirds suffer their first defeat and fall to the same 2-1-0 record.

The same two teams face off tomorrow night at Nicholas Sheran Arena, puck drops at 7:00 p.m.

51 saves to earn the 5-1 win. Very impressive! But he and the 'Horns would drop a 2 goal decision the next night and the UBC T-Birds get the split

T-Birds strike back

LETHBRIDGE -- After falling 5-1 to the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns on Friday night, the visiting UBC Thunderbirds redeemed themselves against the noticeably flat Pronghorns by winning 3-1 and walking away with a weekend split.

The T-Birds opened the scoring six minutes into the game when UBC sophomore Marc Desloges found a rebound in front of the Pronghorns net and potted it just over the shoulder of Pronghorns goalie Scott Bowles. UBC Captain Brad Zanon found the back of the net on a power play when his seeing eye shot made it through a crowd and past a screened Bowles. UBC went to the locker rooms with a definitive lead in shots, 17-8.

The Pronghorns did not take long to reply in the second frame, on a power play of their own. Lethbridge D-man Andrew Marshall blasted a shot from the point past a screened Francois Thuot, to cut the lead to one. The Pronghorns missed a chance to even the score five minutes later on a UBC turnover, but Thuot made a glorious pad save to preserve the lead. UBC rounded out the scoring late in the second period on a power play. Curtis Billsten, broke in off the right wing and caromed a shot off Bowles right shoulder, which bounced into the net. The Pronghorns rebounded in the period and held a distinct shot advantage of 17-7.

While the third period was held scoreless, the Pronghorns had a number of chances to cut into the lead. The Horns best chance came on a breakaway by Derek LeBlanc. Marshall sprung LeBlanc on a clear breakaway but Thuot made another stellar pad save to keep the T-Birds up by two.

Bowles stopped 30 of 33 shots, while Thuot turned away 35 of 36 for the win. The Horns drop to 2-2-0 while the T-Birds improve to 3-1-0.

The Horns head out on the road for two weeks heading to the University of Alberta next weekend, followed by a trip to Saskatoon to play the defending Canada West Champion Saskatchewan Huskies. UBC hosts Regina this coming weekend at the Winter Sports Centre.

Birds are flying high to start this season. Lets hope they can sustain this momentum against the Huskies this weekend!

Good to see Scott Bowles playing and doing well.
