whats going on in edmonton? 2 guys have left for personal reasons.

First Hengen, now skrudland. Are these both for the same reasons(dont want to get too far into it unless its something like icetime, or disliking the management)?

EDMONTON -- Scott Skrudland made modern Edmonton Oil Kings history when he scored the Western Hockey League expansion team's first goal in a pre-season tournament.

The 19-year-old Skrudland is now history himself.

The Oil Kings announced Tuesday afternoon that Skrudland and veteran defenceman Michael Hengen were no longer on the roster. Both players are returning to their hometowns to play junior A hockey for the rest of the season.

Skrudland will join the Winnipeg South Blues of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League while Hengen will suit up with the Surrey Eagles of the BCHL.

"It's kind of a carbon copy situation for both players," Oil Kings general manager Bob Green said. "They both wanted to contribute more to the team and we just didn't have room for them."

Skrudland, the nephew of former NHL player and assistant coach Brian, played in seven Oil Kings regular season games. He didn't register a point and had 20 penalty minutes.

Skrudland spent four years in the WHL with the Medicine Hat Tigers, Kamloops Blazers and Saskatoon Blades.

Meanwhile, Hengen, 20, played with the Swift Current Broncos, Saskatoon, Calgary Hitmen and Moose Jaw Warriors during during five seasons in the WHL. He scored eight goals and 25 assists in 65 games with Moose Jaw and Calgary last season.

Hengen told Green of his decision to return home during the weekend.

"We respect that," Green said. "And to be fair to Michael, this is his last year of junior and he wants to have a bigger impact on a team."

Green said Hengen was a part of the Oil Kings power play. But, in the last few games, the GM said Hengen was averaging "10 to 12 minutes" of ice time.

"We're sad to see him go, but I think it's a sign that we are developing our younger players," said Green. "And we want to reward those young guys with more ice time."

Green mentioned the improvement of Edmonton product Drew Nichol and Tyler Hlookoff on the back end.

"Both Drew and Tyler are playing at a higher level than we thought they would," said Green. "They're both learning the power play and we're confident they will fit in very well."

As an Oil King, Hengen recorded one goal and four assists in nine games. He sat for a total of 10 penalty minutes.

"We're going to replace Michael," Green said. "We just haven't decided if it will be another 20-year-old. If we can't find someone, we'll call someone on our protected list."

With Hengen's departure, the Oil Kings are left with four 20-year-olds. The team has can carry five overage players.

The Oil Kings meet the defending WHL champion Tigers for the second time this season in Medicine Hat tonight. The Tigers won the first game 6-2.

Edmonton's next home game is 7 p.m. Saturday at Rexall Place when the Broncos buck into town.
