CHL and WHL Announce Team WHL Roster for ADT Canada Russia Challenge
Created: Oct 25, 2007
CALGARY, AB - The Canadian Hockey League and the Western Hockey League today announced the Team WHL player roster and coaching staff that will compete in the 2007 ADT Canada-Russia Challenge.

The ADT Canada Russia Challenge will take place November 19th to 29th, 2007 in Canada as the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) All-Star Teams, from each of its three member Leagues (WHL, OHL and QMJHL), take on the Russian National Junior Team in a six game series. Team WHL was selected by a special committee of WHL General Managers along with Al Murray, Hockey Canada’s Head Scout for the Canadian National Junior Team, as part of the selection process for the 2008 World Junior Hockey Championships.

The complete Team WHL roster consists of 31 players - two goalies, ten defensemen, and 19 forwards. Karl Alzner and Thomas Hickey, the top two WHL draft picks at the 2007 NHL Entry Draft and members of Team Canada during the Super Series, will lead the defensive core on Team WHL. Zachary Boychuk, who also competed with Team Canada at the Super Series, along with rising star Tyler Ennis, will be representing the WHL class of 2008 at the NHL Entry Draft and participating in the 2007 ADT Challenge.

The two WHL games will be hosted by the Kootenay Ice in Cranbrook, B.C. on Wednesday, November 28th and the Medicine Hat Tigers on Thursday, November 29th.
Game tickets are available at the Kootenay Ice Office (250) 417-0322 and at the Medicine Hat Tigers Box Office (403) 527-8406.

Since the introduction of the ADT Canada Russia Challenge in 2003, Team WHL has gone undefeated versus the Russian National Junior Team, posting an 8-0 record and outscoring their opponent 47-11. Overall the Canadian Hockey League has a 21-3 record during the ADT Canada Russia Challenge.

The WHL also announced today that Canadian National Junior Team Assistant Coach Curtis Hunt of Regina Pats will serve as Head Coach of Team WHL. Don Hay of the Memorial Cup Champion Vancouver Giants and Wil Desjardins of the WHL Champion Medicine Hat Tigers will serve as Assistant Coaches of Team WHL.

“With the Russians bringing their top team, this series promises to be much more competitive then previous years”, commented WHL Commissioner Ron Robison, “The ADT Challenge provides an excellent opportunity for our players to compete at the international level while delivering an outstanding event for our loyal fans in Kootenay and Medicine Hat.”

The CHL has confirmed with Hockey Canada that the Russian Ice Hockey Federation has committed to sending their top National Junior Team, which competed at the Super Series and will also represent Russia at the 2008 World Junior Hockey Championship, coached by former NHL player Sergei Nemchinov.

All six games will be broadcast nationally on Rogers Sportsnet with RDS televising both games from the QMJHL.

Last year the CHL won all six games of the series and Team Canada would later go on to defeat Russia and win the Gold Medal at the 2007 IIHF World Junior Championships. The CHL has won the past four ADT Canada Russia Challenges and Team Canada has defeated Russia to win the Gold Medal in the past three World Junior Championships. Most recently at the Canada Russia Super Series, Team Canada went undefeated versus the Russians posting a 7-0-1 record.
