On Wednesday night, the Phoenix Coyotes headed to Southern California for a one-game road trip against the Anaheim Ducks.

Through the first five minutes of the opening period, both clubs exhibited a fast tempo of play, racing into the offensive zone and trying to capture the first goal of the game. Phoenix captain Shane Doan nearly had a breakaway before being caught from behind at the last second; then moments later, fed a pass on a two-on-one to rookie forward Peter Mueller, whose shot was swept aside, keeping the game scoreless.

At 8:51 of the first, Mueller made up for being stopped on his first shot, as he took a perfect pass from defenseman Keith Ballard on the left side and tipped the puck past Ducks’ netminder Ilja Bryzgalov for a 1-0 Coyotes lead. Phoenix center Steven Reinprecht received the secondary assist on Mueller’s second goal of the season.

Shortly after taking the 1-0 lead, Phoenix found themselves shorthanded when blueliner Zbynek Michalek was called for a delay-of-game after the Coyotes net was dislodged. Anaheim would only need 13-seconds of the ensuing man-advantage as Ducks’ forward Chris Kunitz set up in front of goaltender Alex Auld, grabbed a rebound from a shot by Ryan Getzlaf and backhanded the puck past the left leg of Auld and into the net, tying the game at 1-1. Kunitz’s goal was his sixth of the season and the 50th of his NHL career.

Phoenix would have an opportunity to regain the lead just before the 12-minute mark as the Ducks took a pair of minor penalties, just 16-seconds apart. During the resulting five-on-three, the Coyotes were able to establish constant pressure on Bryzgalov and the Ducks, but couldn’t produce the go-ahead-goal and Anaheim returned to full strength still tied at 1-1.

Late in the opening period, Phoenix received a scare when Anaheim’s Travis Moen lost control of his stick and struck Coyotes defenseman Ed Jovanovski on the right side of his face. Fortunately, Jovanovski wasn’t seriously injured and was able to finish the opening period, which came to a close with the Coyotes and Ducks tied at one goal apiece.

Just over two-minutes into the second period, the Ducks’ Ryan Getzlaf nearly had a breakaway, but a diving Jovanovski was able to poke the puck off Getzlaf’s stick. While the Coyotes were able to prevent the shot on goal, defenseman Derek Morris was hit with a minor penalty for slashing, putting the Phoenix penalty-killing unit back on the ice.

Anaheim wouldn’t technically score on the resulting power play; they were able to take a 2-1 lead just one-second after the penalty to Morris expired. On the play, Ducks defenseman Mathieu Schneider released a shot from the point, which ricocheted off the right skate of Anaheim’s Todd Marchant and into the Phoenix net. The goal was briefly reviewed by the video-replay booth, but ultimately ruled a goal.

The Coyotes fought back and with 11:35 to play in the second, tied the game at 2-2 on Peter Mueller’s second goal of the game. The play was set-up by Shane Doan, who made a great no-look pass to Mueller at the right side of the goal, where he was able to fire the puck through the legs of Bryzgalov.

At 14:14 second, the Coyotes power play returned to the ice following a high-sticking penalty on the Ducks’ Marchant. The power play would be the break the Coyotes needed as Steven Reinprecht tipped a shot from Jovanovski at the point, past Bryzgalov for his third point of the night.

Minutes later, at 17:11 of the stanza, the Coyotes were able to extend their lead to 4-2 with Radim Vrbata’s team-leading fifth goal of the season. Phoenix’s Mike York set-up the play by controlling the puck behind the Anaheim net and sending a pass to Vrbata in the slot. Vrbata then moved the puck to his backhand and lifted it past Bryzalov and into the net. Following the goal by Vrbata, Anaheim Head Coach Randy Carlyle made a goaltending switch, putting Jean-Sebastien Giguere in for Bryzgalov.

Although it appeared the Coyotes would take a two-goal lead into the second intermission, the Ducks were able to close the gap to a single goal with 1:17 to play in the second on Schneider’s second goal in as many games. As a result, the Coyotes and Ducks would head to the locker rooms after 40-minutes of action, with Phoenix holding a 4-3 lead.

Anaheim’s Drew Miller evened the score at 4-4 at 1:38 of the third period. Once again, Mathieu Schneider got things started by blasting a shot from the point that deflected off the boards and into the Phoenix crease where Miller crashed the net and muscled the puck into the goal to tie the game.

With 15:45 left in the third, Peter Mueller made his already memorable night, even more so when he took a pass from Daniel Carcillo behind the Anaheim net and slid the puck through the legs of Giguere for his first career NHL hat-trick. Fellow rookie Martin Hanzal recorded his first point of the night with the secondary assist on Mueller’s third tally.

Unfortunately, the lead would last just 1:23 as the Ducks’ Corey Perry tied the game at 5-5 when he followed the play into the Phoenix end, moved to the slot, took a feed from Chris Kunitz in the corner and snapped a shot past Auld for his ninth goal of the year.

At 16:50 of the third period, the Coyotes were forced to kill-off a late penalty when Jovanovski was sent to the box for holding. This time the Coyotes penalty killers were quick to pressure the Anaheim forwards, keeping them from getting into a rhythm and allowing Auld to make the saves needed to keep the Ducks from re-taking the lead.

Neither club would be able to produce the game-winning goal during regulation as the contest headed to overtime with the score tied at 5-5.

In the extra frame, both clubs took an aggressive approach, trying to score the game-winner. The result was five minutes of exciting end-to-end hockey, which featured a number of quality scoring chances at both ends of the ice.

Then with less than a minute to play, the Ducks gained control of the puck in their own zone, but were unable to move the puck out of their own end due to the Coyotes aggressive fore-check. As a result, Anaheim’s Corey Perry turned the puck over just inside the Anaheim blueline, allowing Phoenix captain Shane Doan the opportunity to wind up and unleash a blistering slap shot that raced past Giguere and into the net, giving the Coyotes a 6-5 victory.
