Broncos raffling shed for good cause

The Swift Current Broncos, along with Home Hardware and the Cypress Hills Regional College, have brought back a successful fundraiser that last season saw the three partners donate $1,570 to the Salvation Army Christmas Campaign.
Members of the Swift Current Broncos Life Skills program have been constructing two sheds, one of which will be raffled off for charity. Home Hardware has donated all of the materials and supplies and will sell the second shed to recoup a portion of their costs.
The concept remains the same, but this year the Broncos have chosen the Dr. Noble Irwin Regional Healthcare Foundation as the recipient of the proceeds of the raffle to be drawn at the game on Jan. 5th against the Saskatoon Blades.
Broncos’ forward Dale Weise explained how the team chose the Dr. Noble Irwin Regional Healthcare Foundation.
“It was kind of a group decision. We had a few options from last year that we wanted to do and we never got around to it. The coaches kind of had some input this year. Everyone kind of had their own vote and we just decided on the one that was best for our team.”
Weise explained that the leadership roles change from the ice to the construction site.
“It is a little different. There are some guys that are a little bit more vocal on the ice and in the room and they have absolutely no clue here. We have some guys that used to do some construction so they are a little bit more in a leadership role. Mostly Brian Drinkle kinds of runs the show and tells us what to do.”
Weise also admitted that success on the ice has made it a little more fun to participate in the Life Skills program and build the shed this year.
“It was a little frustrating last year while we were doing it. I think that we lost five in a row and nobody wanted to get up at 8 a.m. to come in here. Everyone is having a lot of fun on the ice and in the team activities it is a little different atmosphere this year.”
Life Skills instructor Ron Toles said, “I think that one carries on to another. When they are winning on the ice they are better here, when they are better here they are winning on the ice. I think that there is a lot of correlation”
Toles was very complimentary of this year’s group.
“This particular group has been amazing, they are motivated, they are hard working and focused, and they are a lot of fun.”
What some Broncos fans may not realize is that the players who have finished high school are still continuing their education while in Swift Current with the Life Skills program through the Cypress Hills College.
Toles explained the evolving program.
“Every Monday and Thursday morning from 9 a.m. to noon we meet here or at college and do a series of life skills programs. Right now we are doing building, carpentry, and teamwork.
Other things that we have been involved with are communication skills, doing interviews, first aid and CPR, last year we did yoga, curling, and financial planning. We will just see what comes up. The second semester from January to March is unplanned, we will see what the kids want and put together a program.”
Only 1,000 tickets for the shed will be available this year at the Broncos office and from Broncos players.
