Rockets sweep Cougars in double dip

Saturday, November 10, 2007

On a night where nothing could go right for the Prince George Cougars, nothing went wrong for the Kelowna Rockets.
Lucas Bloodoff scored twice and Tyson Barrie had three assists for Kelowna as the Rockets pummelled the Cougars 6-1 in WHL action on Saturday night in Prince George. Kelowna has now won six straight games, including a 5-1 victory over the Cougs on Friday.
On Saturday, it seemed everything the Rockets threw at the P.G. net went in – as witnessed by Kelowna scoring four times on 14 shots through two periods.
“It was a funny night . . . and parts of it were pretty ugly,” said Rockets head coach Ryan Huska, whose team now has points in its last seven games (6-0-0-1). Last night‘s points can be attributed to the power play, as Kelowna cashed in four times on nine chances.
“In the first period, there were lots of turnovers both sides,” said Huska. “Overall, it was a ho-hum start. But in the second, we capitalized with our power play and it seems that took the wind out of their sails. That, and we had some good bounces (go our way).”
Also scoring for Kelowna (11-7-1-1) were Colin Long, who opened Saturday‘s scoring at 14:13 of the first period, Kyle St. Denis, Brady Leavold and Dylan Hood. Ty Wishart replied for Prince George (9-13-0-0), which tied the game late in the first period, but trailed 4-1 after 40 minutes. The Cougars have now lost four in a row.
Torrie Jung made 19 saves for the Rockets in his first start since a 4-3 shootout loss to Moose Jaw on Oct. 27, while Real Cyr turned aside 24 shots for the Cougars.
The Prince George radio crew commented how Leavold, Kelowna‘s agitator, was in Cyr‘s kitchen for the entire game.
“Individually, we don‘t have many players like Brady,” said Huska. “He thrives when he talks, and (Saturday), he was rewarded. He was very vocal tonight, and he can do a good job of getting under the skin of opponents. When he skates, works and talks, he‘s very good.”
The win moves the Rockets six points clear of both Prince George and Kamloops and to within two points of second place Chilliwack.
ICE CHIPS: Kelowna‘s scratches were LW Matthew Brusciano (concussion, day-to-day), D Riley McIntosh, LW Jesse Paradis, D Kyle Verdino and D Tysen Dowzak (ribs, day-to-day). Prince George was 1-for-9 on the power play. . . . Saturday‘s attendance was pegged at 3,350. . . . The Rockets‘ next game is Wednesday, when they host the Kamloops Blazers. Game time at Prospera Place is 7 p.m.
