here in austria we are just wondering why he only made 15 out of 25 games? he also missed last game vs. tri city. anyone who can give me some information about his performance in spokane, his impact on the team and his (near) future in the league?

He's doing okay...considering.

He's a newcomer on a very quickly rising team, so he's not seen much ice time yet. Wears a full face shield (by choice?), which I think makes him look even smaller than he actually is. I've seen him on the ice next to Jared Spurgeon, and he makes Spurgey actually look big. In all seriousness though, one thing I've noticed about him lately is his physical play. He has stepped it up big time, even looking for some big hits in the open ice. Stood up to 6'6" former Chief Matt McCue against Chilliwack last week in a scrum in the corner, which took more than a few guts.

With time to develop, he will do well in this league. He should fit in nicely as a 3rd or 4th defensemen, perhaps a PP specialist.

I heard that something happened during camp and he's still having dental work done. Not sure of course on this, could be wrong. Can't remember where or when I heard this.

the biggest reason for his 15 of 25 being played is simply the fact that he has to get used to the north american game. He likes to carry the puck waaay too much at times and has to get used to that he can't do that in the north american game, he has to dump it and play extremely safe.

With that being said, that kid has some good moves, a good shot, and some nice wheels. Like pointed out above with some time I'm sure he could be a good pointman on the PP unit and will begin to hit his stride next year (if hes still around, more than likely if he continues to develop).

He's an offensive defenceman, and thats what he was drafted for, just a little time and seasoning and he will be playing more. I like what I see though personally.

Ulmer will be leaving this Mon to play for Team Austria in the World Under 20 Championships in Germany. He'll be gone through Dec 26. This should be a good experience for him.

very successfull start for team austria. after beating poland 6:1 yesterday we won today against co-favorit norway 5:0 and stefan scored his first goal! he's playing a decent tournament so far with team-leading +4 after two games! i think we've a realistic chance to go for gold - judgement day should be on saturday against the big favorit germany!

no happy end für surprising team austria at the u20 div1 championships. after 4 impressive wins we lost the last game against germany 3:6 and failed to qualify for next years world u20 championships in ottawa. stefan played a good tournament, as nearly whole team austria did, and finished with 1 goal, 1 assist an +4. he's a sure candidate for leading our nationalteam through the u18-championship in latvia next april. until then you guys can follow his play in spokane and hopefully keep us (across the pond) updated :D with his progress!

hopefully the confidence he's gained carries on and he earns his way into spokane's lineup every night............

austrians div.II-team red bulls salzburg (nearly a u20-farmteam of last year champion red bull) lost yesterday against team canada (u20) 0:5. stefan bolstered up the line-up of salzburg - as he took part in the pre-season-camp of red bull's international icehockey development model last summer. he played a decent game, but the bulls had no real chance against the defending world champions.

I was sitting with sean zimmerman(former chief) when i believe it was mitch wahl accidently high sticked ulmer and knocked about 5-7 teeth of his out.......after coming out of of the first aid room...zimmerman ran down to see him and see how bad it was b4 ulmer went to the specialist/hospital........when zimmerman asked ulmer if he was o.k.......ulmer replied....."oh ya..i wuuuv it heeer".......ha ha....classic!!!!!!!

this is also the reason ulmer has been in a face mask for so long........he may have chosen to wear it longer than needed after experiencing that as well i dont know.

that said, ulmer skates very well and i expect he will get better as he adjusts to north american hockey /WHL.

now with the play-offs starting soon, could someone please post some news about ulmer? it looks like he became a starter for the last games, after beeing scratched periodical for nearly the whole season. even his numbers raised seriously in 2008. did he made the next step and will he get permanent play-off-icetime? i hope someone could give me some information - maybe even about his future with the chiefs!

He's still splitting time with Bret Bartman and Jace Coyle. All three have been very good when they've gotten their chances; given the occasional rookie mistakes. I think part of the reason Ulmer has gotten so much ice time lately is because of injuries/illness, and due to the fact that the coaching staff has rested some of our better players for the playoffs.

Ulmer will continue to see rotating time, playing on average every 2nd or 3rd game in the playoffs; seeing occasional power play time. Next year we will probably only lose 1 defenseman in Justin Falk, so Ulmer, Coyle and Bartman will again have to battle for spots, and also may have to do so with 16 year old Brenden Kichton.

He's been good though, using his stickhandling and passing skills to his advantage. His defensive play still needs to round out a little bit, but his physical game has ramped up a little bit over the course of the year. Stefan has been a great pickup by the Chiefs; he's been a very strong 5th-6th defenseman so far in his WHL career.

I'm going to have to disagree with you on this point, since there were about 2 weeks left in the season Ulmer has pretty much beaten out Coyle and Bartman for the 6th defenseman spot. Coyle got some time when Glass was out a few games at the end of the season and Bartman has played next to none over the same time period. It pretty much came out of nowhere as Bartman and Coyle were usually splitting the last spot and Ulmer usually would be the one sitting, unless the Chiefs decided to dress 7 dmen. I don't know what happened that made the Chiefs decide to start dressing Ulmer all the time, but I can't blame them for doing so, he looked excellent in game 2. His positioning was solid, he played physical hockey and he looked pretty good on the power play as well. I could definitely see the Chiefs letting Falk go next year while giving Ulmer a full time spot and letting Coyle and Bartman (plus any other rookie) battle for the 6th spot.

I think alot of the reason Ulmer has seen so much ice lately is because he is Very good on the PP. I can really see an improvement in the pp when he is out there. he moves the puck really well , And helps create offence. Though he hasn't found the back of the net a whole lot himself, he is getting good shots from the point. Or he pulls defenders out of position and creates opportunities. He is still making some rookie mistakes ,But I think once he gets those ironed out he'll be a great asset for the Chiefs. Wish he was about 6 inches taller though...lol.

I actually figured the team would go back to using Coyle most of the time in the playoffs. It's a good problem to have with 3 extra defensemen who are all good though. Good to see Ulmer making the most of it though.

i think this "problem" could be solved next week, as ulmer is said to be part of austria's u18-team for the div.1-world-championships in latvia from april 2. to 9.

ulmer is not part of the final roster for team austria. any information why? maybe he wasn't released by the chiefs because of the play-offs? someone here with some facts about this case?

it's me again. watching the play-off-stats (unfortunately my only chance to follow the chief-games  ) i've noticed that stefan is the best-scoring chiefs-defender so far! last game vs. the americans he was the sole spokane-player with a +1!
seems quite a good development from part-time-team-member in autumn to "top-scorer" in spring! anyone who can give me some "real-life"-impressions of ulmer's play-off-performance?

It was awesome to see Ulmer step up and fill that 6th defensive spot on the Chiefs for the postseason especially considering that they rotated between 3 guys all year. IIRC, he had the best +/- of all Chiefs defensemen during the playoffs, which was a real credit to him. He made very few mistakes and did give the Chiefs' power play something extra, although their PP conversion rate this postseason didn't look very impressive.

He continued his solid play in the Memorial Cup as well. I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think he was ever on the ice for a goal against in the tournament. He didn't do anything spectacular, but he made all the right plays when he was on the ice. Ulmer will definitely be a key piece of the Chiefs' D corps in their quest to repeat next season. I think we'll see more of the same solid defensive play, but I expect an increase in his offensive numbers this year.

This kid has a lot of potential. He's fast, handles the puck well, and WOW he actually takes shots. The glaring thing he needs to learn is to avoid being hit; whenever the opposite team had a big hit on a Chief player, 90% of the time it was Ulmer. To his credit he never appeared to be shaken up. I'm glad we have him.

I was actually very impressed with Ulmer's durability. Coming into camp, I was very worried about a guy Spurgeon's size coming from Europe to a league where players are known to target the Euros. He dropped some chiclets and it didn't seem to phase him right off the bat.

Ulmer and Roman are both very durable for European players...or anyone for that matter. What's funny is seeing Stefan step up for the big hits. Guys don't expect it from him, so on more than one occasion this year I saw him flatten opposition players.

Funny to see such a little guy throwing big hits.

He didn't play like a depth D when I saw him, in fact even with Glass and Spurgeon on the squad he was looking like a probable top two in terms of what he was brining to the ice. I never suspected he would have been a part-time in and out of the line-up guy. to be perfectly blunt that fact surprises me and frightens me as to the true depth of the Chiefs.

Ulmer has some great defensive instincts a nice shot and some great speed as far as I witnessed.
