Hurricanes Secure Future
November 27 2007

Lethbridge, AB - The Lethbridge Hurricanes’ Board of Directors have voted unanimously to activate the option years for General Manager, Roy Stasiuk and Head Coach, Michael Dyck, effectively extending their current agreements through the 2008-2009 WHL season.

Board President, Brian McNaughton, says his group is satisfied with the progress of the team, “Two years ago when Roy was hired, there was very clear direction provided as to the manner in which the franchise was to be operated and the direction we wished to go. Roy has achieved and exceeded those expectations to date.”

McNaughton has similar praise for Head Coach, Michael Dyck, “Regarding the on-ice performance, we have shown improvement both in outcome of games and consistency of play. This is a challenge when the roster is in transition. More importantly, Michael has shown a commitment to the development of our players. Our young players play in all situations and during critical times. This is a key to the long-term success of the team.”

The Board of Directors believe many objectives have been accomplished since Stasiuk and Dyck first joined the team in November 2005:

Improved relationships with local media and working with the media as a partner in promoting the community and the team
Establishing a “vision” for the organization centering around becoming a landmark for Lethbridge and southwestern Alberta through a successful team and franchise, adhering to core values and principles put forth by the Board of Directors
Ongoing activities and new initiatives by the entire organization show there is a real commitment to the vision as witnessed by an aggressive On-Side Committee responsible for the Celebrity Sports Dinner and other fund-raising projects which have realized over $80,000.00 in the last two years while improving the player experience for Hurricanes’ athletes and contributing towards partnerships with the United Way, minor hockey and the University of Lethbridge just to name a few. Board member, Shawn Hass has done a tremendous job in heading up On-Side projects
Our commitment to the Lethbridge Regional Hospital Foundation and We Care programs remains strong with the annual Teddy Bear Night and Duck Toss promotions during Hurricanes games
A strong commitment towards education and academics under the direction of Education Advisor, Jim Stewart, and in concert with the coaching staff has all Hurricanes’ players are enrolled in either high school or post secondary studies. Each player is expected to maintain or exceed grades and obtaining a high school diploma is mandatory for participation with the hockey team
The Hurricanes’ are also big proponents of encouraging academic excellence in the community and have partnered with the Lethbridge Herald in presenting the “Reading, Make It Your Goal” program to several elementary students in Lethbridge and the surrounding area in an active and meaningful way
On ice the team is very entertaining and identifiable as a fast, skilled and competitive group. The work and effort in preparing for the WHL Bantam Draft along with identifying, recruiting and coaching young prospects provides ‘Canes’ fans with the confidence of a long term and viable hockey program
The willingness of the players, the hockey staff and the administrative staff to put the organization “first” before personal successes and recognition is quite evident and our commitment to meeting and serving the needs of the individual and corporate sectors is an ongoing work in progress moving in a positive direction
“The Lethbridge Hurricanes Board of Directors is committed to excellence in all areas of operations.” said McNaughton adding “We believe Roy Stasiuk and Michael Dyck have the same commitment and we are very happy to activate these agreements at this time.”

HURRICANE'S ROCK

Good move by the board. Dyck is proving himself a a good coach. Stasiuk proved himself a good GM a year or so ago. We are a top team in the Dub and I venture to say, the "most entertaining team". Yet Roy has not sacrifised the future to get here.

On the contrary, Roy as a lot of good things stored up for we Cane fans in the future. Ashton, Reners,Theriau and all of our top draft picks. Remember we get a high second (Kamloops) for Leclerc yet, plus all of our future first and second round picks inplace.

This team can be very very good for quite awhile, or "Trader Roy" can deal for "huge" top notch talent and go for the Memorial Cup in the next year or two. It is up to Roy in which year we win the Cup. Not if but when!!!!!!

GOOOOOOOOOOOOO CANES !!!!!!!!!!!!
